Heidelberg off under 40's discounted rates on 6 and 7 day memberships. Not sure if it extends into the 5 day and below, i wouldn't think so.

We have a 100 rule.

If you have turned at least 65 and your age and years of membership total 100, you move to a special category. Fees are slightly lower, unsure by what percentage.

That what you mean?

Nice Rob, Don't mind that as it is a decent chunk off the membership and makes you more than likely stay!!

Voss what are you looking at or for? Is you committee looking to change the structure or just curious? Maybe able to contribute more if your looking for something specifically?

Need to be careful on structure of a loyalty fee discount. I’ve seen some clubs have major financial strife when a large portion of members hit the discount!

And the shizen fight it causes to the older members who got their 50% discount from the mere fact that they were old when it gets brought up at an EGM regarding the dire finances of the club.

Thanks Chopper. Golf Clubs are continually looking to add value to the membership base and to retain numbers. Incentives are a part of this retention process and my post relates to enquiring what clubs offer for a reward for service on a continuous basis.

I don't like the idea. Older members with long memberships aren't a problem to golf clubs until they drop off the perch.

The churn is with members who get into relationships, have children, get a scary mortgage. That's the area all clubs are addressing with under-40s, lifestyle memberships etc.

In my opinion, the part of the market that nobody seems to address directly is the empty nesters. There are lots of people around 50, both men and women, who suddenly have time and money. Bowls clubs are nailing it with barefoot bowls.

What are golf clubs doing ?

Thanks for the comment Mouldy. I am not sure about your comment that the Bowling Clubs "are nailing it" but if true, it is not the under 40's going there , it is the older brigades that should still be playing golf, hence my key word of INCENTIVES. This age group need to be retained at all costs. Once gone , they are gone !!

The average age of golf club Memberships is getting older. That does not suggest that the older members are leaving in droves. What is happening however is that many clubs have discounted fees for senior members. As the average age of members increases that means more members receiving the discounted rates & less paying the full fee. I am sure you can work out where that is going to lead golf clubs. I will also add that the senior members on the discounted rates are normally the members that play the most golf.

True biggest factor is, in my opinion, cost or time but both are relevant too each other. If one is limited the other is hard to justify to continue paying\playing.

I'm in a scenario where I have changed jobs and costs is being looked at on where we needed to cut back. Golf membership was very close to the chopping block and still is but hoping that come renewal time we might be ok and I can still continue it. If I didn't have the discounted rate under 40 then it would be going.

The problem I see is not so much the under 40 category anymore but the 40 to 50 category. The reason being is people are having children later in life. I was 36 and 37 for my 2 kids. Which means come 45 to 50 the kids will be at that sport playing\dancing age where weekend time might be limited and I can't play anymore. Whereas in the past, most were having kids in mid to late 20 or early 30 so come the over 40 and kids are not as reliant on mum and dad as much.

One membership that I can see may be of value and just throwing it out there and rough. Maybe offering a 1 day membership. You pick your day excluding Saturday and you pay a membership for this. Your rights are you can only book in 2 days before (IE Sunday then the earliest you can book yourself is Friday). If you want to play any other day then it is at the guest rate except for Sat where you pay full rate or a nominated fee amount or something like that. As said just popped into my head so not sure if viable or not. But at least it may keep around people who would otherwise give their membership up and the club still gets some money in rather than it going elsewhere.

As Madam said though the balance of discount to retain and ensuring the club can stay afloat is a very tricky one and a balancing act that can lead into lots of trouble.
