Hi Bruce, enjoyed reading your recent article on the merit of Black (& Blue) Tees v. White Tees.

Obviously it is a joy to play from the tips for any advanced golfer and test yourself against the original design of the course. But there does come a time when age and / or ability dictates mode and method of your individual play . The best comparison is to measure Saturday play against Mid Week play and it is common these days to see larger fields Mid Week. The older Members much prefer White Tee golf and to most the challenge is still there. I believe Golf Clubs have done the correct thing by introducing 'Gold' Tees for high handicappers but maybe the next step is to introduce an option of play off the white tees when the competition of the day is off the tips.

I believe Golf Clubs have done the correct thing by introducing 'Gold' Tees for high handicappers but maybe the next step is to introduce an option of play off the white tees when the competition of the day is off the tips.

Club where I do my marshaling has been doing just that for quite some time now, apart from Monthly Medals.

Saturdays is off the Blue tees with an option to play off whites. Thursday comp is off the White tees with an option of playing off the Yellow (Gold) tees.

Monthly Medal rounds are a bugbear...A & B grade off Black and C grade off Blue, way to hard for some. I've been advocating for change, A off Black, B off Blue and C off White, sparked some interest from committee members but nothing done as yet.

Some of the C graders off the Blue tees cannot reach the fairway, I witnessed a C grader take 7 shots to reach the fairway on one par 5, granted he took a few to get out of the trees where his drive ended up BUT had he been off the White tees he would have been starting the hole past most of the trouble spots he found himself in.

Doesn't do much for pace of play either.

At Kooyonga
We have white tees on mon tue Thurs Fri and sun
On wed and sat we have blue tees and a gold option.
On mm first sat of month we have black for all grades and a stableford comp off golds
Changing tees for mm IMHO may devalue previous winners
It may get to a time where you have to nominate for MM to play off the back tees as more and more people are struggling with stroke play

Gardiners Run.

Play of any tee you like.

Monthly medal is of the blues if you want to go in it or of the other tees if you dont

Hey seve_, do you have MM handed to all grades or just one overall winner?

The one overall winner was how it used to be in a bygone era, then it became less valued, in my opinion, by having a MM winner for all grades. If this is the way clubs do it why not have the grades off different tees? What is the point of a C grader struggling around off the back tees and coming in with a massive score then winning a medal...that would devalue it I reckon.

I'm sure most C graders would prefer to play forward, enjoy the game and have a decent score to win their grade...right OB? ;)

Golf course designers mostly set narrow landing areas, bunkers/hazards etc to catch out the A grade/long hitters, to penalise them should they stray from the tee. What is the point of a C (or in some cases, B ) grader being penalised getting caught up in these situations on their 2nd/3rd/4th or worse shots? That' s why there are forward tees so these hazards can catch all levels at the same point of their game.

I had this very conversation with Bruce at Kooindah Waters a few years ago...I said to him that I like to play from the back tees so I can experience the whole course. Naturally Bruce shot me down (called it bullshite actually) with a very logical argument about what I have described above.

It used to be one MM winner it changed a while ago
Well before I was a member before June last year
I understand Bruce's point but Im a bit of a traditionalist just think changing from stableford to stroke and same tees is not medal worthy
Our so called handicap system should give the appropriate extra strokes when playing of the back tees

I agree also about the devalue of having 3 winners
Here is my radical thoughtthought
the medal goes to everyone who nominates and plays off the tips
All the others can play off any tee they like gold white blue and the winner gets a coffee mug for each tee division

I regularly play off the golds in practise it actually changes the course and brings certain bunkers and other hazards it makes one think and not robotically select a club.
Where do I need to hit to get the best position for my next shot

You may well be correct BE. I'm not in a position to confirm your assumption, but thank you for considering the possibility that I know everything.

I think you're overplaying his responsibility in all of this Goldy, I think it's time to let it go and focus our attention on the things we can blame

Doesn't the slope rating allow for higher handicappers to get a couple more strokes off their cap from the back tees?

It may have been at some clubs with diminishing membership.

A couple may not be enough.
