No one is forcing a golf club to spend $66,750 a year to run competitions. That is clearly a choice. I've never heard anyone say they joined a club because they love the way the club registers players and processes cards. All you need is an internet connection to put scores in and I'm sure you could find a volunteer member to do it for a 6 pack of beer after each comp. I don't understand this arms race to see which club can have the most advanced system to tell a computer someone had 1up or 1down.
Who said anything about a race? That is simply the cost of doing business for the bigger clubs. The new computer systems make the bigger clubs more viable by saving on costs. Again, there is nothing simple about organizing the competitions for an entire club for an entire year.Everything has to work with everything else.
And to suggest that finding a volunteer to do anything is easy shows how much you are aware of what happens round a golf club ( And most other clubs for that matter )
