I don't think you should ever pass up the opportunity to play at Royal Melbourne if have traveled from overseas. The West Course is a magical piece of golfing land and it is worth every cent.
As far as some of the other options discussed the Old Course at The National comes close.

It's not worth close to $550. Or $500. $300...no.

Somewhere well south of that number.

Hole-in-one Growling Frog 14/1/17 5th hole 137m TM RBZ 5 hybrid / Srixon AD333 ball | Growling Frog GC Matchplay Champion 2017

I'd be willing to shell out $200 for the game of golf, I would no doubt be spending close to that in merchandise and food /beverage afterwards

I wouldn't pay over $200 for a round there but really $500 is not that far off what you would be paying to play most of the top 20 courses in the world if you did know know members.

Check out Pebble Beach. The Old Course at St Andrews is a public course. Still over $200 to line up. Augusta is a private club. We are a bit spoilt with RM because you can play a Charity Day if you are lucky enough to get an entry in early enough.
$550 is an expensive day out
We got on NSW GC for half that but who was complaining?

It's incredibly expensive compared to fees in Australia, but it's actually pretty reasonable compared to courses in the US. I played there a while ago and got paired with a Saudi guy and he couldn't believe it was so cheap. He was telling us about a recent trip to the US and green fees were all over $500USD ($630AUD). That's just what it costs overseas for a top ranked course, made me realise how lucky we really are.

Yeah I've heard places like Pebble are north of $500US for green fees

They also have memberships for like $50k+ a year so I guess it's all relative.

It's the destination as much as anything.  Then you can say you played royal melbourne.  Carries more value than saying you got a great value round on the mornington peninsula.
