I don't like this.  I understand the frustration, but so long as someone has a valid Golflink handicap, seems peevish to exclude them on the basis that you don't approve of where they hold their membership.  If the club wants to ban all non club members from participating the in the comp, that is one thing, but picking and choosing as to which handicaps you want to recognise is a bit of a farce.

What peeves our captain is that former members join back of Bourke courses for sweet FA, and still, play 3-4 times per week in club comps and take money from existing club members. Far enough too. This isn't what the OP point was though.

If your Club is charging them full green fees then I don't see the problem with them playing.

Surely your membership fees aren't more than 3-4 social green fees a week?

Surely with the number of golf courses out there they should be:

a/ encouraging people to be on the course (taking their money across the bar, pro shop etc.)

b/ looking at ways of converting visitors to members.

To be honest a club that is not inclusive is really shooting it self in the foot. Let's use my situation (which certainly isn't unique) as an example.

I am a golfing tragic, played off a relatively low handicap as a junior at a country club in Western Victoria. Stopped playing when I moved to Melbourne for uni and found girls and pubs and didn't have a disposable income. When I started work, I got back into golf joined a club in Melbourne convinced my wife to join and was fully committed to the club, involved in committee and became captain of the club. Then the family came and basically I was playing 10 time a year for a full membership - it was not worth the money when there are so many good pay for play courses in Melbourne.  The whole time when I wasn't playing or even when I was living overseas, I kept my membership at my original club - partly to support them but also to keep my handicap so I could play the occasional game both there and when invited by members of clubs.

For years I played maybe 5 rounds a year (this year has been good I have got it up to 15 rounds). For the past couple of years I have had to put exemptions into Golf Victoria to play in the 4 ball championships because my playing partner and I haven't played enough rounds in the year. I can honestly say while I have had the occasional good round in that time I certainly haven't been able to contend against someone playing regular golf.

Anyway my point is my kids are getting older and I may be interested in joining a club in Melbourne again in the near future, and it won't just be me but my wife and at least one of my kids is interested in playing regularly (although still a little too young for comp). I certainly will be looking at clubs that have been inclusive towards me rather than excluding me from competitions etc. especially with a young junior I want a club that will support them not exclude them from competition.

So by being exclusive the club will be missing out on not just my membership but my wifes, and families for the next 40 years + of golfing life.

Your club captn can't seem to get basic business right.

They pay the green fees. WEekday $25 and Weekend $35 - split the diff and call it $30 per green fee player.

They pay comp fees.

they buy food and drinks - would aim to squeeze $10-15 per person.

So assuming said green fee player would spend on average 20 wks at your club, you would expect:
1. Green fees of approx $1800 pa. (more than twice your membership fee no?)
2. 60 rounds pa, with $5 spend on food and bev each round equates to $300 spend each year.

So my guess is that your captain doesn't like money for the club as well ....
