Played Rosanna this afternoon. Hit a one under 70.

These are my impressions.

Fairways in great condition. Santa Ana couch. Very nice.

Fairways quite wide.

Greens fairly simple. No tricky greens. This suits me because I am a poor putter.

I thought the greens were small. I think the three biggest greens are on the last four holes.

Bunkers are well designed and in good condition. Not many of them though, but some are quite large, so they cover some territory.

Condition of greens were no better than OK. Maybe they are better at other times of the year?

Very quiet and isolated... I think you can see only a few houses and the road is adjacent to only the first hole and the second tee.

Four par 4s at 400m or better. I’m already thinking that these are four of the more important holes.

Four par 3s of varying distances... I hit PW, 8, 3F and 5 iron.

I could hit 6 iron from corner of the range to the other without getting close to the markers. I hit my 6 iron about 160-165m with proper golf balls.

A long time member told me that there are six holes that get very wet during winter...and the course will be occasionally lift clean and place from time to time... and on some occasions compulsory “tee up”. He says the only time the course has closed in recent years is when there has been an absolute downpour.

I think there is a lot to like about Rosanna.

It did...and that is something I need to keep in mind. I won’t score like that every week.

The course has a slope of 128...I wonder if that is accurate.

Is an 18 hole course an essential part of your criteria ?
There's a little 9 hole course that uses 2 tees in that same area.
Good lay out and firm challenge. Off the back tees it's has a slope of 136.
Think it suffers the same fate as most the Yarra river courses over deep winter but in summer the condition is great.
Think a family membership is $1500 so that would cover you and your wife so what you save there would give you and extra $2000-$2500 for playing other courses or trips.

Played Heidelberg on Friday.

Compared to Rosanna, the greens at HGC are bigger, have more slope, and right now are both faster and in better conditiion.

The course is challenging... I hit through a number of dog legs and there are more than a few trees and bare dirt, sticks, rocks etc - what I call Skippy country - to punish the wayward shot.

My wife was not a fan of the uphill climbs. This could be an influential factor.

I can see why HGC members are proud of the course.
