Brownman... after playing golf all my life i for some reason developed  the YIPS...suddenly i was missing 18 inch putts and its was nerve racking and embarrassing.

I saw my handicap slip and everytime i walked up to a short putt that moved left to right i was shitting my self.

Then one day i played with a blind guy who got set up by his wife on every shot. Whilst understandably he hit the ball all over the place the one thing he never missed was a short putt.. Why?? because if his stroke and alighment were true all he had to do was hit the ball....

This was a light bulb moment for me. When i got home i looked up the Jordan Speith no look putt and... i no longer yip...

I now set the putt up on the path i want move my head to look at the hole and stroke it. I now have no nerves and very seldom miss a short putt

Give it a go

what distance would you stop looking at the hole? tried it last round and it works but you do get a little nervous over the longer putts

Any putt that requires a power putt where it is more important to hit the ball out of the centre of the club. Also, any time the ball is sitting on an uneven surface and there is a danger of the putter hitting the ground before the ball (as when putting from the fringe).

I find it works very well for judging how hard to hit the putt, particularly for breaking putts. When planning a breaking putt, the strength of the putt depends very much on the line that you pick. Seeing that line as you putt makes a big difference in getting the feel for the putt.

If the reason that you are doing this is to prevent the yips, then I would say any time the putt crosses over into the distance that you can swing the club freely and not get in your head about it.  That might be a different distance for different people.

Not sure you would call it the yips or just a lack of ability with the short stick :D

Yeah I get it.  But there is definitely a distance for me where I don't think that I *should* make the putt, so my technique gets a lot freer.  On the shorter ones I actually have to concentrate on technique a little more to make sure I don't have any hiccups.

Supercoach recommends putting looking at the hole from long distances to assist in gauging speed of greens and I do it as part of my warmup every week, but not during the round.
