When i used to play royal park a fair bit I saw a few good rules arguements...
1, seeing someone's dog digging in the bunker, Not a burrowing animal, no relief was granted.
2, 2 small children making sand angels in the bunker, no relief given.
3, what looked like someone had locked the front wheel of a bike into a bunker and peddled causing a deep wheel trench in the rear, No relief given.
So stupid.

Well considering someone's taken the liberty of nominating a burrowing animal and a digging one to offer relief or not is one point.
2 children making sand angels in a bunker is only going to happen at a course where a tram, train, and local bike paths and walkways intersect so yeah a local rule should be in place for those situations.
Same with the third scenario but hey I can't complain with the deep wheel rut. Guy took a 9 on a par 3 cause of it and I won club champs by 2 shots...

What's stupid is a fox digs a hole and it's relief but a dog does and it's not. Neither are meant to Ben part of the course.

Perfect example with the last point by Luke - guy loses his club champs because someone messes up a part of the course and it doesn't get marked as GUR. Great for Luke but that's not what the contest is meant to be about.

And this to me says that the rules are more important than playing the game.

It's inherently stupid.

Those playing at the highest levels of the game would never have to tolerate a non-manicured bunker. Yet weekend golfers are expected to put up with vandalism and animal damage as a common occurrence.

We are supposed to all be playing with the same equipment on reasonably maintained courses under the exact same rules. The aim being to make play consistent for all. We even have very specific course ratings and complicated formulae for handicapping as an attempt to level the playing conditions.

But it just doesn't happen and some rules just make it worse.

Those playing at the highest levels collectively generate enough cash to pay for staff to manicure the courses they play. This money ultimatly comes from ordinary punters like us.

If we were prepared to pay all that money to our own course management, we could also enjoy such course conditions. Or we could practice more and become elite golfers ourselves.

Or we could all tidy up bunkers after we played from them. It's not the rules fault we don't.

It's also not my fault if I end up in a tyre track or a boot print of some other inconsiderate knobjockey who doesn't give a crap about how he leaves the bunker he just bludgeoned his way out of whilst riding his BMX with his trusty dog at his side.

That felt good.

It's not the rules fault if an outside agency directly interferes with my call either, but I get relief from that. Or that a leaf blew against my ball and knocked it off course, but I get to replay that.

But if that outside agency leaves a huge hole in the bunker that nobody intended to be there then stiff biscuits.

Unless it's a burrowing type outside agency of course
That's different

The above applies to all players.

The complaint, as I understood it, was that the pros have certain advantages.

I was saying that our money pays for those advantages. Don't pay to watch them (live or TV) and they won't get the special treatment.

That's OBs issue

I just think some of these rules are weird - why should it matter how the animal that dig a hole likes to sleep at night?

I'd be quite happy for the money I pay to go to course maintenance rather than fund national bodies for them to swan around the world watching major tournaments.

Then, courses could employ local workers to ensure bunkers are playable each day and they could double as 'heavies' to belt the rug rats who ride their bikes in wrong places.

While there are some inconsiderate pricks who don't tidy bunkers they've been in, the problems from 'outside agencies' are worse.

What rule suggests that something that is described as a hazard should be perfect?

I seriously question whether the rules experts in here ever actually play golf.

Bunkers were originally natural sandy areas and natural hazards

Nowadays bunkers are artificially created with overhanging edges, carved deep into the ground and artificially bought in sand. They are built to be difficult with a decent lie. They're not natural in any way.

So I don't buy the argument that because they are hazards they aren't meant to be perfect. If they were just natural sandy areas then absolutely - they shouldn't even be raked.

But they have been created specifically to he difficult and challenging even with a flat lie. They wouldn't be created like they are if they were expected to be full of holes and foot prints.
