Im heading over to NZ for Xmas in Aukland and then heading up too the Bay of Islands for a few days of rest and golf!

I've looked at Kauri Cliffs......$495 (ex gst) for 18 holes is way out of my league..... so looking for any recommendations re other courses in the area if anyone has played them?

Waitangi is the poor man's Kauri.

I haven't played for a few years but its cheap with some great views, i also had a game at KeriKeri, think its now called Bay of Islands GC.

Both are good country courses, you will need to check condition with someone who has been there more recently.

If you want to spend cash, give Kauri a miss and head for Tara Iti

Course looks absolutely mint, I gotta get over there but will probably wait until the present operating model fails or gets wound back slightly.

Did you stay there Mads?

I don't mind paying up for golf but the trip I knocked back, the on site accommodation was something like $1000 per night.

I dont think it will get knocked back as its backed by a mega wealthy US business man, huge development around it etc.  Like the story said it is unlike what we are used to down here as a golfing experience.  It was in good shape when we played but sill fresh turf so had to take any spikes off your shoes! One hole I didnt like was a dogleg blind shot which I dont particularly like in design.  Id love to play again now that Ive played but looks like that wont be happening per the story!   I was escorting a few VIP's so I got to tag along and play with them!

If you can find a way to convince them that you are a kiwi at Kauri Cliffs it's half the price of a international guest.
I might have to go home for a trip now I know this.

* Information several years old

We tried this, and became NZGA affiliated golfers, Howlong style, think we paid NZD$35 to some club on the Sth Island.

When we got there, we produced our cards, the guy in the shop asked for our Kiwi drivers licences.

I gave it a go and went "shut bro, I lift it at home, eh".

FAIL.

The correct response would have been "Sod off JAFA"

Whatever you do, you do to yourself

Dammit, I was thinking of just bringing along the nz passport and saying I had moved back to Nz and had moved to whangarai. Probable fail ?

Passport may work vs having a club membership. worth a try.
