I've had a hundred on him at $34.00. Hoping he can keep it going!

Wow, Speith is co-leader at 5 under.

What makes that interesting I reckon, is that he did it with only 36% of fairways hit. (83% GIR)

Either he missed the fairways in the right places, or the rough is not that penal.

Fellow leader Kuchar was also under 50% of fairways hit (43%) and 67% GIR.

The 3rd co leader Koepka had only 50% GIR.

I reckon that shows that the course is playing pretty easy, you can miss fairways, you can miss greens, yet still get your par or better, which seems a tad odd for an Open.

The course may have been set up a bit easy on Day 1, and they may have hoped the weather was going to play a big part in toughening things up, (and keeping scores down.)

If the weather doesn't have an influence in the upcoming rounds, then pin positions will need to get much harder, otherwise this could turn into a shootout.

Just my thoughts though ..... :)

Few observations from day one :

Had to feel sorry for 60 yo Mark O'Meara carving the first shot of the tournament OOB
Justin Thomas looked pretty smart wearing a black tie !
Aussies in real good shape with morning tee times for R2
Coverage pretty ordinary ie ball sound out of sinc, following the ball difficulties etc.,
Golf course a beauty , pretty similar to sand belt Melbourne.
Go Aussies !!!

On the other hand, Darren Clarke hit GIR 78% of the time, yet finished 10 shots adrift of the leaders at +5.

Stats, don't you just luv em!!

The rough was hit and miss. There was a few yards of primary cut, but if you were further offline than that it was luck of the draw whether you got a lie or not from what I saw.

Wind didn't really blow in the morning.
Casey and Schwartzel (afternoon tee times) probably had the rounds of the day.
Weather is supposed to be worse this morning than this afternoon...which will mean one half of the draw will get best conditions both days, bit like when Rory won at Liverpool

Think the greens were a bit softer due to morning rain. Groups within first hour had wet conditions, so think it may have helped throughout the day. Saw a few balls almost stop dead on the greens throughout the day, which would help GIR % (if the direction was right)

Forecast is for wind to die down in the afternoon...if it doesn't 5 under will lead it.
Great to see some shot making for a change

What is going on with Jason Day? He drops 5 shots in his last 3 holes to shoot 76. That's 4 missed cuts in a row. Sure his mum has been crook, but she's going to make a full recovery, so there's got to be a reason he's playing like shite.
