Hopefully the system may be more comprehensible than our current one.  After a 20 year absence from club golf, I'm off 8.7 and am yet to break 80.  I played with a visiting 4-marker recently and watched in perplexed amusement as he cold topped it 4 times off the tee (one with an iron on a par 3) and missed almost every fairway and green.  I even beat him on the back nine off the stick.

Seems like the current system cultivates way too many very low markers out there that seem to hang big numbers.  Kooralbyn's not that hard is it?

Everyone can have a bad day. I'm capable of shooting even par or even under on occasion but can also throw in a high 80's round from time to time.

Obviously the guy can shoot some good numbers otherwise he wouldn't be off 4. If the handicap system were different and he was off 8 we'd just have people complaining when we eventually shoots 1 over and has 43 points.

As a relic of the 80s and 90s, I am still of the mindset where a 3 marker would be a fringe state player and anyone getting to scratch would be discussed in revered tones.  Nowadays you're lucky to get a start in AB events (in QLD).

I recall a golf mag story about a young Peter O'Malley getting to +4 (or some unheard of handicap).  He wouldn't even be the lowest marker in the field at last years Keperra Bowl and there's about a dozen more just as "good".  Either the handicap system is rooted or Australian elite golf is looking incredibly rosy.

The worst I can see is an 83.   Not sure I'd call that "High 80's.....but I know what you are getting at.

I think you are correct.

It was done on purpose, as Australian golfers struggled to get considered for US college's and US Amateur tournaments under the old system, because they were competing for spots against Americans who were using the slope system. A 1 handicapper under the old system in Australia might be much better than a +2 marker from America, but that was difficult to compare on paper so Australians were getting over looked.

The authorities can't win

Apparently right now it's too easy to get a low handicap but it's too easy for high handicappers to win everything

^ I don't see why they would be mutually exclusive things.

Under the new system, it's easy to get a low handicap. Under both systems, it's easy for high handicappers to win everything.

I attribute this as the main reason I didn't make it on the US tour.

It's a crying shame it didn't happen 30 years earlier

I stopped taking any notice of American golf handicaps when I saw Donald Trump claiming he was off 3

There's an 88 in there not long ago that I had at Stonecutters (although to be fair it was like playing in a monsoon that day)
