We had a Jayco Hawk (from memory) pop top that we sold on just a few years ago.

The reason we sold it was cause it was basically taking up golf club storage space .....(we didn't use it enough to justify it filling up the garage)....... but pop tops can be pretty good value.

They are surprisingly light and very easy to tow. Not too bad in terms of set-up times either, although that can always be improved. Our old one had those stabiliser legs that you had to unwind manually all the way down to the ground with a wheel brace .......they were a bastard of an idea, so we just packed a charged up cordless drill and bit, and knocked around 15 minutes of our usual half hour set up time.

If you want a new pop top (or even second hand) though, good deals can be had by waiting until the old Caravan and Camping shows roll around. :)

Ha ha - have learned so much around Tare Weight, ATM, Ball Weight, braked vs unbraked towing etc etc!

Have done some early stage investigations into some diesel Patrols and the ilk, and I think that our extra-urban adventures won't be that extreme, in fact, the most extreme will probably be down a dirt or gravel track at a caravan park, or trying to not to get bogged at one when it rains!

Remember, there are PLENTY of good second hand ones out there. Like all things, you'll save thousands with second hand.

Two likely objections are:

1. The mattresses - don't want to sleep on someone's old mattress? Pretty easy to buy a new one, and if ya look into it, you get can a much better quality mattress than the standard ones in a 'new' van.

2. Water leaks - pretty easy to check. Put the van up and get out a hose. If the person selling it is reluctant to let you do that, walk away. Do it and punch the water into all the joins and folds. Hose pressure will be WAY more than nearly all rain events you'll be caught in, unless you're heading up this way to cyclone country.

Couple of other things with second hand:

Wheel bearings - a pretty cheap and easy item to either replace your self, or get done. Do it. Be safe. Carry a spare set.

Wheels / Rubber - again, a pretty cheap and easy item to replace. Get new tyres and avoid the side of the road hassle.

Warranty - seriously, what can go wrong with a van? It's not like a car or electronic goods. Most items are fairly standard and easy to get fixed, or DIY fix.

Take plenty of pictures and post 'em up here!

AND?

Here is a pic of the boys stepping out of an Eagle. Think that it has the layout and space that best suits us. Dont want brand new, so will be hunting for a used one that ticks the box in terms of age, condition and price.
