You could easily argue teams are better at defending these days, meaning shots at goal are taken from harder spots on the ground.

You don't often see a forward one out in the goal square these days.

You certainly don't, not in the goal square these days, but the hotspot a bit further out (20m) is now pretty much the last option for the attacking team, when no-one is moving on the forward line.

That's the place they will head if faced with no other option.

With the demise of the full forward and the teams now playing more of a team and zone based defence though, most teams have several scoring options up front, rather than one big forward and a boatload of crumbers chasing him around for scraps.

This means that rather than fill the space of one potential leading full forward (as used to be the case), the defenders need to concern themselves with the whole 50m arc now and several potential and viable scoring options.

I was watching a game on the weekend just gone (can't remember who it was, such was the bland quality of it) .... and on multiple occasions a forward was able to take an uncontested mark within 50m, whilst in the middle of a static play, zone type defence .... simply because the defenders were guarding space, and the forward just led up past them and got to the ball a few yards ahead of them.

That doesn't help them much though when they then turn around and can't kick much better than just 50% of what they are aiming at.... they might as well close their farkin eyes sometimes, and just have a ping ........  cause it would matter not a jot I reckon ..... :)

Yeah but how many marks get taken at 20m out by attackers? Not too many. Intercept defenders float across and take them all day.

Forwards and attacking teams are quite often forced wide, and that means a shot from 35-55m on the boundary which is obviously harder than 20m straight in front.

That being said, they also draft players for athletic ability these days rather than football skills so that probably has some effect.

I am sure there is something about that you can teach an athlete to kick, but you can't athlete a kicker

whomever it was who said was probably more eloquent then I said it

They do indeed say that. Whether it is true or not is a pretty unanswerable question.

Now Tony Lockett on the other hand ........ without doubt the best player to ever kick for goal, was certainly no athlete, so perhaps as you say, they are churning out athletes instead of goal kickers.

Perhaps its worthwhile to forgo 1 or two spots in the forward line, and just put in guys who can kick goals, as opposed to those who are able to run 15kms each game.

I guess it reminds me of that Nick Bloody Reiwoldt (tosser) , who they say has "a tank that can run all day".

Sure he can run all day, most of it chasing his tail or falling over himself, and being that far away from goals that its never going to hurt the opposition.

He's certainly not the person I'd want taking a free kick, late in the last quarter from 30 out ...... with a grand final win on the line. :D

It's the Sandringham Dragons' fault
Clearly they're just churning out sub standard kids year in, year out.

Back in my day you got drafted because you could smash 12 cans and half a pack of darts before training and still cruise through circle work.
Bloody kids today, too many safe spaces and not enough clips around the ear for mine.

Excuse me it's the Sandringham Dragons Finishing School for young gentlemen.
We don't have factories bayside.

30 seconds isn't long enough to lower the heart rate and line up let alone kick the ball straight. ....
