It's like being in the centre of a cyclone in Melbourne at this time of year. So quiet. A bit of horse racing, Storm and Victory dominating, Rebels rubbish, yet another Shield win about to happen.

But we all know that's about to change on Thursday night when footy is back and will dominate our lives.

Being a highly regarded Sage here's the winners and losers of 2017

Doggies - premiership hangover plus all the other clubs dissecting their game plan will see them close but not back to back.

Swans - Buddy/Tippett salary cap pressure starting to take effect. Dodgy defence and any key injuries will see them slide. Still top 8.

Hawks - rebuilding and without their 2 best midfielders. Roughie back up forward will help but with limited supply they are mid-table.

Giants - Premiers

Lions - total rubbish team on and off the field and spoon favourites.

Suns - a few cameos from Ablett should get them knocking on the door to the 8.

Dockers - Fyffe makes a big difference but they've still got the worst coach. Guaranteed to go back to ultra defensive mode so they will win more games and Lyon can say he's on the right track. I will not be watching any of their games as they are so boring.

Eagles - a lot of key players getting to the age when injury prone. Defence looks shaky. Bottom 8.

Crows - good footy team with my here Eddie to star again along with Tex. Top 4 material for me.

Port - team without heart or talent. Bottom 4 certainties.

Demons - New coach will have the players happy playing a more positive game plan rather than having Roos in charge. However, they will cop a few thumpings and will finish in the bottom half of the table.

Pies - Buckley's last year and what a great opportunity for whoever gets his job. They have a good young list and will make the 8 this year. Contenders in the next 3 years.

Bombers - plenty of passion but fairy tales rarely come true. Can't believe players can miss a year and comeback 100%. May well start the season off with a bang and end with a mid table or worse whimper. McGrath to win the Rising Star.

Norf - crap coach and list. When a 40yo is one of your best you know there are serious problems. Bottom 6.

Cats - defence looks very shaky and Hawkins continues to underwhelm at the other end. Great midfield has them at or around 8th.

St Kilda - are they the next Doggies ? Buggered if I know. Didn't watch many of there games last year but it seems like a very even list. Seems like the experts think they'll play finals. I not that sure.

Tigers - Dimma is odds on favourite to be the first coach sacked in 2017. Peggy will also walk. Dusty will take big bucks to move elsewhere and will not be trying too hard. When the biggest sook in the game since figjam Buckley gets back in the leadership group you know there's no leadership. They might be top of the table on Thursday night but it's all downhill from there.
Bottom 6.

Blues - another crappy year coming. 2 more drafts and we can start moving forward. Whilst Daisy is still getting a game we're bottom 4.

Blues v Lions for the Spoon. North will surprise again. Saints miss out and Dimma and Bucks will be looking for anew job come September.
I'm tipping The Crows for the Flag.

What I'm talkin about is a game... A game that can't be won only played...

Crows GWS GF for mine.

There'll be plenty of good football this year I'm looking forward to it.

I get the rebuild tag, but still hope the Blues get under the skin of a few opposition supporters along the way. Seven wins last year, same again would be a great result for Bolts.

Josh P. For Brownlow in first year as captain.

Like the look of Demons, Eagles, Cats, Swans, Bulldogs, and Hawks for the eight. Any order. Doesn't seem to matter anymore.

It's all gold. No need to 2nd guess any of the predictions. Just lock it in with some well placed bets.

Bookies have Norf 3rd last. Scott to be first sacked might be value.

Judging by the moulded sole's predictions above ....... it appears that only two or three teams are actually going to make the top 8 this year, which should make for a very short finals series, . not to mention a crowded ladder with 15 or so teams down near the bottom.

For me, I don't really give a toss what happens, as I reckon footy pretty much died many years ago when they introduced the salary cap, and started stealing from the rich to prop up the poor.

South Melbourne, Fitzroy (Brisbane for any youngsters), Hawthorn, North Melbourne ........ all of those clubs (and a couple more along the way) should have been allowed to wither and die.

They really shouldn't be allowed to post in AFL threads...unless there's a "W" at the end.

He's a Carlton supporter.

They really shouldn't be allowed to post in AFL threads...unless there's a "W" at the end.

I'm not much (if anything) of a Carlton supporter as you know these days Goldenthighs, as they are absolute crap, and I'm the first to admit it.

In fact, the last game of theirs I endured at the MCG, I got to witness one C. Judd go for a mark over his Adelaide opponent, and that was in the last game he ever played, as he came crashing down, and was never heard from again. (Those few years spent carrying 17 other guys each week, was too much for his shoulders to bear in the end.)

It's not just the salary cap that annoys me these days, its pretty much everything the AFL touch that turns to absolute shite. Eg, the subsidised interstate teams, the lopsided draws where you play some teams once, and some twice, the constant rule changes (understandable given you create a rules "committee" ...... they need to be seen to be doing something), the fact the AFL boss gets paid 3 times more than the best player,  a lot players being reported for all manner of frivolous and laughable reasons.

There is a whole litany of reasons why I have gone sour on the game at the highest level, and I reckon I'm not alone.

Back in the old days, people would go to the footy just to watch one player kick a bag full, or go to watch a much anticipated one on one match-up. These days you have 1 key forward being swamped by 2, or 3 rotating defenders, so none of those contests ever occur.

Back in the old days, when someone kicked a ton, you'd have 20,000 people pour on the oval in a second. Do that these days, and that would be $100 Mil into the AFL pockets ...... from all the farkin fines they'd get to hand out.

If they would only put something half decent up against the footy on the TV, (as opposed to reality show crap or C grade movies), then I'd probably never watch it. ...... :)  (W)

I can see why he hates the salary cap then

It's the socialists running the AFL that have stuffed the game.

The most successful sporting competition in the world is EPL.

EPL doesn't have a salary cap.

The AFL would probably prefer it if there were no supporters at the games then they wouldn't need to spend a fortune on infrastructure security etc. just enough TV towers to get the main source of income.

They do seem intent on this course of action when they charge $8.50 for a glass of mid strength beer. Golf will soon be far cheaper than football.

NBA, nfl and MLB all take more revenue than the premier League so not sure that makes sense but anyway.

Will be interesting to see if they drop beer prices at Etihad now that the afl own it.

Doubtful but one can only hope
