Who is better from hard and shallow bunkers than deep soft ones? Why?

Who prefers lots of soft sand under the ball? Why?

What are the keys to good bunker play from each scenario compared to the other?

Hard shallow bunkers you'd be looking to pick the ball up cleanly, more like a regular shot. You have plenty more option on how you get the ball out of a hard shallow bunker. You can flop it out, punch it out, putt it out, make it have lots of spin, make it have no spin.
A soft fluffy bunker limits you to one type of shot, splash it out.

I prefer less sand, not no sand but only some.

The keys are to practice how the club reacts to the sand for each different type of sand and bunker shot type.

There, clear as wet sand?

For hard and shallow I'm still thinking of situations where you would play it as a splash rather than ball first contact - although there won't be a lot of space under and it won't have the same sort f cushion

Do you swing shorter in the hard bunkers and play it basically identically to a lob expecting a little sand but pretty much a similar result to how it would be playing a lob of a decent lie?

A splash from a hard bunker is a fat chunk, they're no good.

Yep, I'd look to play them similar to a normal ****, ball first.
As far as length if swing, there'd be too many factors to change it rather than a general.

Wet sand is of course another scenario

How do you treat it differently - heavy but deep sand?

Provided the ball is sitting ok on top, take as little sand as possible.
It's all about eliminating factors out of your control.

And this folks concludes the morning session of Bump and Weets Bunker Q and A.
Join us later for some more in depth chats about other fun things.

No bunker Q&A is complete without how do you keep the ball on the green if you hit it first.  It is called a fed ex.  How do you get the ball out of a bunker if you hit the sand first.  That is called a hitler.  How do you get the ball out of a bunker using the hosel a la a Mouldy shank.

Reasonably shallow bunkers are the easiest to play from I reckon, as they are all about finesse, rather than having to force the club through the deeper sand, which involves a lot more guesswork. (EG, will it be firm underneath, will it be wet underneath, how compacted is it, how much will it slow the club down?)

The softer and easier you can slide the club through under the ball, the better, and the more accurate the outcome is likely to be, and that is exactly what you want when playing in reasonably shallow bunkers ..... just slide the clubface under the ball with the minimum of fuss.

With wet sand you have the bounce to consider .... will the club actually bounce off the wet compacted stuff, and into the ball, again though it shouldn't be a forceful shot, so you should have some idea of the swing length and speed required.

Deep bunkers are far and away the hardest to judge I reckon, cause you know the sand will slow the cub down by at least some considerable amount, so a combination of distance control and the face angle to a certain extent, is going to be pure guesswork as to the result ... unless you have a fair bit of practice from these types of bunkers..

Just my thoughts though ...... :)

The short answer is all about making the correct connection in the first place, the outcomes will take care of themselves.

Give me hard, compact or wet sand any day

Not sure why but I feel much more confident in those conditions.

I also generate a lot more spin from that kind of lie.

I'm with you there

Which is a problem as I get the other type of bunker more often

And I'm expecting it to be the norm for National's to have deep soft sand
