For the more knowledgeable out there how do you measure your putter length? Is it top of grip to where shaft meets putter or to bottom of putter?

And how do you know what type to go for eg counter balance etc

From the tip of the shaft, down to whre the sole of the clb hits the ground at address.

Counter balanceing is a tough one as its usually based on feel.

Head shape can be a preference.

Neck design is a big one i reckon.
I can line up a flow neck very well.
A plumbers neck, i cant hit a bucket from 1 foot.

Toe hang or face balance?
Depends on your stroke.

Straight back straight throughis generally a face balanced option.

Varying degrees of toe hang available. All dependent on how far your eyes are from the ball in the vertical axis.

Like me, i set up withmy eyes 3 to4 inches inside the ball. So i got a putter with a flow neckfor alignment and a 80* toe hang for my stroke path

yes and a funny thing about putters is that a $50 putter misses same the amounts of putts as a $500 putter

so just because a putter is an expensive OEM brand doesn't mean it will make more putts than a no name brand, IF its poorly fitted.

best way is to go to a club fitter like TGP, or someone who has a SAM putt lab and learn what type of stroke you have, as what Robnewy described above.

That will eliminate half putters you are considering.

then its about finding lie angle, loft, length and weight (including counterweighting).

sadly some of the big retail golf shops dont really help putter fitting. its morel like fitting you to the putter that on sale.

Does it matter on how long you use it?

Mine is 34.5 inches .....well I'm very particular ....not

That's the length it was off EBay .....it's fine

I'm thinking the bloke who cut it to 34.5 inches was very very particular ....it came with a fat grip on it and the other thin original one in the box

I think he tried everything to make it work but couldn't

Fine for me
