Very well done to the young man.

I found it interesting that this win means he will delay going pro. It just goes to show how stupid the system is when winning the biggest tournament of your life means you delay starting your professional career.

Joins some great names in winning the US Amateur.   Hope he can get plenty of sponsor invites and win enough to earn a card.

I am pretty sure The Masters, US Open and British Open are the only ones you have to stay amateur to be invited.

Amateur status has changed a bit the last few years, DeShampoo travelled the world while he was still an amateur.

When Nick Flanagan won he got plenty of invites before and after he turned pro. They look after the US Amateur Champion big time over there for the first year or two after winning it.

Nick had to qualify for tournaments in Australia while he got invites in America. Aus Golf is run by muppets.

I can see why he would stay an amateur.

The point I was trying to make was that he shouldn't have to stay an amateur to play in those events. He should be able to play for money and still play in the events he qualified for as an amateur.

Plus all the amateurs stay in The Crow's Nest at Augusta.

I have to totally disagree. I think this tradition is brilliant. I have never heard one player say a negative thing about it.

Fair enough, I don't think I've heard players say anything bad about it either.

I guess if you got rid of amateur status all together you wouldn't have tournaments like this with qualifying for the majors, you would actually have to qualify with the big boys.

It is a super cool experience for the amateurs who get to play in these events.

My dad got to caddy at the Par 3 Tournament at The Masters for one of the amateurs a few years back.

Bruce what events will he now get invites for and does he have to stay amateur to be invited?

Climate what the others here have said is essentially correct. He must be an amateur to take advantage of those invites otherwise he loses the chance to play. Some have chose to turn professional after say the Masters and forfeit the right to play the US and Open Championships.

He has indicated he will stay amateur until after the Open Championship but of course the other side of that coin is that the potential exists to lose some of your buying power in that twelve months or so. He is hot property now.

He will play the Eisenhower (now known as the World Amateur) in Mexico and then the now other must play event as an amateur the, Asia Pacific Amateur Championship in Seoul in early October and no doubt all the professional events here this summer including the Australian Open, the PGA, the Perth event and the Tier 2 events and perhaps the NZ Open.
