There is also mention made in certain circles of taking your grip with the club pointing upwards and outwards at 45 degrees, rather than taking your grip when its sitting flat on the ground.

Eg taking your grip when you can feel (and take) the weight of the club n your hands.

Along similar lines to the proponents of hovering I would assume.

Yes I did Frank but found I was belting the ball well past the hole.  I am taking a bit of the weight now.  Helps to get a smoother takeaway.

Some of my friends hover the club.. Greg Norman used to teach it.

I don't do it but I see many people do it, good and bad.  Its usually done with the waggle.

Its not about tight grip pressure or light pressure but consistent pressure through the swing.. A lot of players grip pressure is inconsistent starting the swing from a resting or frozen position. The hover can help take the club back more smoothly and keeping a constant pressure from the very start of the backswing.

Interesting. I didn't think there was supposed to be constant grip pressure throughout the swing.

A couple of very good reasons to hover and not ground the driver.

1. You can't waggle the club when you ground it. You would have to raise the club to waggle it and then ground it which sort of reduces the benefit of the waggle.

2. Its good technique to extend the leading arm on the backswing. If the club is grounded, there is the danger of snagging the club on uneven ground and upsetting your rhythm.

Yeah. that is the theory. More constant perhaps especially with driver for a smooth low takeaway path.  People like me who ground the driver tend to pick the club head up on the takeaway too much which leads to inconsistent grip pressure.

I think the theory is just constant grip pressure during the setup and takeaway phase and starting the clubhead on the right path from the ball.

Some people grip it like a gorilla and some don't.  I remember Tiger once saying he never understood people who would tell him to hold it like a tube of tooth past or a bird.  He said he always had a very tight grip.

Grip pressure cant stay the same and everyone is different but the hover theory is to keep it consistent at address and takeaway.  If the club is hovering you can then draw it back low and slow with a constant grip pressure or to put it a better way just less tension.  Some people who ground the club and freeze dramatically increase tension and grip pressure as they tend to pull the club up steeply and very fast.
