Game day and in this Australian summer watching the rain fall at 7am then abate to an overcast breezy day was no distraction. I just wanted to get out and play some competition Golf. Managed to get some chipping practise in the back yard and no time for a warm up with any long clubs. A few putts on the practice green and it was game time.

End result was 39 Stableford points and 75 off the stick. The score was good make no doubt about that. A few errors that would have destroyed the card on the nearby course at Kingston. Which is irrelevant to what actually happened, my pleasure of doing well is not being influenced with optimistic delusion. All I took out of the day was once again the fitness training and practising as little as is being done is setting up my golfd to achieve the targets of season 2016.

The distractions of the requirements to run a business and live in the real world and maintain the harmony to include a golfing commitment is a major consideration. I have always been aware of that not only from my own position but from socialising with and observations of other golfers. It is a major requirement to be a success as a golfer and for average players like me it takes a lot more effort. Thank you for your time and attention.

The score from the weekend has been added to GL and my hcap is sitting on 9.7. Feeling very satisfied with that starting point for the season to come. Have the target of a GA  hcap of 6 by mid season. If not better. Going to be interesting again pushing the limits of ability and capability in 2016 and see what I can put on the board.

So close to singles!

6 sounds like a good target - will challenge you

I'm thinking similarly - mid singles as a goal

Back from the short break of 24 hours and feeling back to normal. Whacked 60 balls on the range and it was a good session trialled a new iron set because I can too. Now sitting and planning an intense session with a book with no golf in it to complete the recharge.

The range session though was very satisfying. The ease I hit the balls and how well after a 4 hour drive was a sure sign of the improvements from a dedicated training program in the gym has delivered.

The development of my own club's golf course to 18 holes at Robe began a few years prior to this development. With the pure serendipity of the moment adding to the impetus. It is a long term project dealing with so many bodies, and regulations in the current way of the world. What it brings is a place that will bring people to a popular region already. What is also going to evolve is a golfing location with seven other already established 18 hole courses within 60-90 minutes of the major development.

Developers of an international standard golf course near Robe in south-east South Australia say it could generate up to 150 full-time jobs and add $17.5 million to the state’s economy.

The State Government granted the proposal major project status in March 2014.

Plans for the 425-hectare site at Nora Creina, 15 kilometres south of Robe, have been released for public comment. The project is estimated to cost between $20 million and $30 million and its proposal includes two 18-hole international standard links-style golf courses, a club house, accommodation, cellar door, wellness centre, wagyu beef farm and an Aboriginal Heritage education centre. Developer Justin Scanlon said 25 full-time jobs would be created during construction and up to 150 jobs once complete.

Sunshine to start the day and out for a range session to tune up for the chicken run. Sticking with the tried and true less is more routine again in 2016. Quality practise is a vital ingredient in my approach and preparation for tournaments etc.

These were the figures at the end of season 2015 for my golfing. The improvement required is based on targeting these specific statistics.

MY STATS
My stats         B Grade average Mens PGA Tour
Stroke average:   76.64             87.55                   71.04
Driving accuracy: 44.57%          57.58%                62.91%
Greens in Reg.:   34.92%          32.81%                64.70%
Putts per round:   33.14            32.47                    29.20

The very first set of 2016 golfing goals is to establish,
Driving accuracy: 51%; Greens in Reg.: 45%; and  Putts per round: 31

This morning was the first genuine test of my greens in regulation ability. With the PW my result was 65% of the balls went in the target area. With the 6 Iron that figure went to 33% of the balls went into the target area. I am very satisfied with that. I can easily set up the practise routine to improve my accuracy beginning with this result. It was quite exciting as only a golfer could say to know the next trial will be the 9 iron and 7 irons to see what the accuracy is, then I will do the 8 and 5 irons.

Obviously the work needs  to be done to get my longer iron accuracy up to the target Green In Regulation figure.  So the effort is already a lot less than I expected in the first instance. Thank you for your time and attention.

I would suggest practicing with different clubs every shot, or hitting the same club to different targets every shot, in order to accurately reproduce a game situation.

Hitting 10 balls in a row with the same club to the same target isn't going to be a good indication of your ability to hit greens on the course.

Your stroke average is very good though!

Interesting stats ............... I'd also be mindful of what clubs you hit in order to get those GIR stats.

It's no good spending a lot of time from now on practicing hitting 4 iron approach shots for arguments sake, if you only ever needed to hit 4 iron into a green just once during the last year. Eg, target your practice to those clubs that contributed to the GIR misses.

I'd also look at your driver misses .... were they mainly on one side of the fairway? Was there always a typical hole shape that normally leads to a miss, etc?

The stats are a good place to start, but you may need to be mindful to target you're practice ....... by drilling down as much as possible to the real causes.

Just my thoughts (from a guy who doesn't practice, nor take stats of his own game .... :) )

Food for thought Tal but another way of improving your GIR stats is to get closer from your tee shots. I don't know if you often use clubs other than driver but if you can be aiming to get into 8i or better range from the tee most times your GIRs will likely come up

If it was not for the feedback from other golfers the biggest fault which can destroy improvement can occur. Ignorance by isolation, when people talk golf it is not a do as I do state with me. Importantly it opens up perspective of the topic. My Driver accuracy is another target that is being worked on, next. The courses I play allow me some freedom off the tee block with accuracy. The greens in regulation statistic is the one that cause most damage to my scores. Most of my shots to the green are now with 6-7 irons thanks to increased fitness and swing technique.

Improvement of that percentage and in combination with the putting will drop 2-4 shots a round quite quickly. The inaccuracy has been identified in the main with a grip and tendency to close the club face GPJ. Such small facets are what make major improvements once a golfers capability improved to the 10 or less handicap range. Over all it will be improving all facets of the game that maintains the continued improvement.I must be able to rely upon my ability to follow up a shot error with a shot that counters it and keeps the score on target each round.

I must be able to rely upon my ability to follow up a shot error with a shot that counters it and keeps the score on target each round.

That is the battle in a nutshell, for single figure golf Tal.

Never hit two bad ones in a row ........ and at least half the time, after you've hit a bad one, you have to find a way to make up for it to ensure that it doesn't sneak onto you're scorecard.

The better you can cover those bad shots .... the lower your handicap will get.

(Note I didn't say "eradicate" the bad ones .... I said "cover" them.)

I figure we're always going to hit bad shots, so we need to make sure that as few of them as possible find a way onto the scorecard...... :)
