Hit a 3W yesterday with a ski glove on .......... it didn't help.

Also lost two spikes off the Footjoys, when I was trying to scrape the ice off the bottom of them using a metal grille on a drain.

Not as bad as this morning though .......... when I woke and hopped into the shower, only to find out the pilot light had gone out overnight.

A freezing cold shower in -1 degrees ........ and then on my hands and knees outside in the darkness trying to re-light it ......... not a good way to start your working week. Needless to say, I'm still shivering ...... :(

Its only about 7 years old OB ...........

When the water never got hot I thought, oh fark, it might have frozen overnight and split its sides.

Thankfully it was only the pilot light (hopefully) ..... as I had to leave for work right away, so I won't know for sure until tonight, when its my first job on the list to check.

Saturday morning we had a similar problem, we have a solar hart hot water system that uses a heat exchanger to extract heat from the atmosphere, no hot water and the unit had been running continuous for 3 days. A neighbour is a sparky so he byepassed the heat exchanger and hooked up to the backup system.

Works perfectly, cost catch you later

Solar hart cost call out $150 plus parts estimated at &300 plus.

Saturday was eventually a good day. Still cold though.

As an aside they do not make these units any more as they are not reliable.

Intended to break 90 this year, not going well.

At that age, I would have expected a piezo starter - no pilot.

Mine's of similar vintage.  It's one of those solar jobs where the in-ground water (probably around 8°) travels up to the on-roof solar thingy where it replaces the 0° water which then travels back to the HWS where it gets instantly heated to tepid.  It's not so bad for the on-suite which is a few feet from the HWS, but at the kitchen which is at the opposite corner of the building, it takes minutes for warm water to appear.  By which time I could have boiled a jug.  So much for 'solar efficiency'.

Would not have thought there was enough hot weather for a heat exchange solar unit in you neck of the woods. A friend of mine heats his swimming pool in a similar manner and that struggles even in Queensland.

I agree.  It wastes so much hot water just getting hot water to the kitchen, it becomes highly inefficient.  The solar heat exchanger is always colder than the ground at sparrow's fart when one takes a shower.  It works fine in summer.

The other problem is that the pipes in the roof (house is on a slab) have piss poor insulation and the residual hot water is cold again in a few minutes.  In summer, when the roof space gets really hot, the hot water pipes stay hot.  But that's only a quarter of the year.

Nothing worse when the frost settles and there is no water inside due to the frozen pipes and you have to wait till 10 am for the water to start to flow again

Yeah it does have the piezo lighter .......... still got to press it though and then see if there is an actual flame.

Talking to a guy at work this morning about it .......... and his Dad's solar panels (for his hot water) blew up on Sunday morning .. showering the roof and back yard in glass apparently.

So it seems there is another issue with solar in the freezing cold ...........

Enough sun on the solar panels to put a load of washing on.

I've got this mental image of you climbing up onto your roof and placing your "smalls" over the solar panels .... in order to get them dry. :)

Not as bad as the mental image of you crawling around outside nude, trying to light your pilot.
