Listening to Iron a Maiden ' Brave New World' on the drive into work today, and thought ' gee there are a number of lyric lines that just stand out' and thought, I'm gonna start a new thread on this.

So any song that hits home or takes you back to a time where you were care free ( or not) or the 1930's ( Tol ), or a stand out lyric(s) that grab you, share with us.

U2's One.
There is a line in there that I always think back to if things are getting on top of me or it feels like I am alone in this world. I feel that I can do good in this world and help others feel loved no matter how much it seems like they are trapped, especially if I am the one who is responsible for trapping them.

Because of condition pointed out in a subtle manner by Ben, I can't remember :) I think.

What was the question?

I think you will agree some deep stuff here by the boys. Huge talent, shame they weren't around for very long.

When will I, will I be famous?

Yes, you're suitably one
With your body and the sun
Yes, you are

You've read Karl Marx
And you've taught yourself to dance
You're the best by far

But you keep asking the question
Oh, you're not supposed to mention

When will I, will I be famous?
I can't answer, I can't answer that
When will I see my picture in the paper?
I can't answer, I can't answer that

When will I, will I be famous?

You keep asking me, babe

You're a slave to fashion
And your life is full of passion

It's the way you are

You've suffered for your art
With the jogging in the park
You know you should go far

But you keep asking the question
Oh, you're not supposed to mention
I'm not supposed to mention

Oh, I can't tell you when
You'll see your name
Up in lights

You won't suffer in silence
You're a talent, you know that I've noticed
You'd like to be a legend
Big star over night?

Tell me, when?

I can't answer your question
I can't wait, it's driving me insane
And you're impossible in patience
Tearing at my brain

It's tearing
I can't take it, take it much more

Hilltop hoods have some fantastic lyrics. This verse in particular is one of my favourites. It is even more powerful when you take into account that this is from the "restrung" version (their album "the hard road" remade with the Adelaide symphony orchestra). In the original version the old man gets stabbed.

He knows nothing but hard work and scraping by,
Looking for a purse or wallet so he can make a buy,
He hasn't been on the nod since this morning,
And he needs to touch the face of god, his skin it's just crawling,
These peeps are sheep, time to fleece the market,
Jumps a train with some friends, sees an easy target,
An old man hard hit by age, faint-hearted,
The kid pulls a knife, like let's get started,
A girl steps he's like eat the carpet,
Laughs with his friend like she's retarded,
The old man stepped and swept the assailant,
Off his feet, his head connected with the railing,
Your weak the old man said as the kid lay recovering,
Blubbering, get to your feet I'll tell you another thing
A real man never lays his hands on a woman,
A real man would know that, no surprise that you wouldn't,
I didn't fight in two wars just so forty years later,
You'd have the freedom to rob me on the train this behaviour,
Doesn't fit with what I gave this country so cut me,
Won't live another day in a world that's so ugly.

You can blame it on the rain
Cos the rain don't mind
And the rain don't care
You got to blame it on something
(Blame it on the rain)
(Blame it on the stars)
Whatever you do don't put the blame on you
Blame it on the rain yeah, yeah
You can blame it on the rain
Girl

'Cause the players gonna play, play, play, play, play
And the haters gonna hate, hate, hate, hate, hate (haters gonna hate)
I'm just gonna shake, shake, shake, shake, shake
I shake it off, I shake it off
Heart-breakers gonna break, break, break, break, break (mmmm)
And the fakers gonna fake, fake, fake, fake, fake (and fake, and fake, and fake)
Baby, I'm just gonna shake, shake, shake, shake, shake
I shake it off, I shake it off

It's not my favourite but the lyrics from a Wall of Voodoo song popped into my head once so suddenly I actually stopped what I was doing.

As I'm sure most people are aware John Lennon was shot dead outside his apartment in NYC in 1980 and in the days that followed it dominated the news. Ten years later I went to New York City and I had a look around Central Park. While I was there I looked across the street and saw the Dakota Building where John had lived. I recognised it instantly from all the news reports I had seen a decade before. There were a few people milling about outside, heads bowed. Paying homage I assume.

I went to cross the street to have a closer look and without thinking about it the words from Far Side of Crazy popped into my head unbidden. "I honoured his assailant when I visited the shrine." I turned around and walked away and never looked back.

Freddy Mercury in his last days before losing his battle with AIDs

It's a beautiful day
The sun is shining
I feel good
And no-one's gonna stop me now, oh yeah

It's a beautiful day
I fell good, I fell right
And no-one, no-one's gonna stop me now
Mama

Sometimes I fell so sad, so sad, so bad
But no-one's gonna stop me now, no-one
It's hopeless - so hopeless to even try

When I get up and walk outside on a great morning that song always plays through my mind

I embrace my desire to
feel the rhythm, to feel connected
enough to step aside and, weep like a widow.
To feel inspired, to fathom the power,
to witness the beauty, to bathe in the fountain,
to swing on the spiral, swing on the spiral.
Swing on the spiral of, our divinity and still be a human.

Pretty much anything by Tool at the moment.

I can see clearly now, the rain is gone,
I can see all obstacles in my way
Gone are the dark clouds that had me blind
It's gonna be a bright (bright), bright (bright)
Sun-Shiny day.

I think I can make it now, the pain is gone
All of the bad feelings have disappeared
Here is the rainbow I've been prayin' for
It's gonna be a bright (bright), bright (bright)
Sun-Shiny day.

Look all around, there's nothin' but blue skies
Look straight ahead, nothin' but blue skies

I can see clearly now, the rain is gone,
I can see all obstacles in my way
Gone are the dark clouds that had me blind
It's gonna be a bright (bright), bright (bright)
Sun-Shiny day.

Theres actually a number of songs that resonate with me for different parts of my life and they happened to be the songs I was listening too at the time when things happened. I will link the song names to youtube of the songs and lyric to full lyrics.

Mostly it has been a lot of Alter Bridge. A lot of downs in the last few years losing grand parents and aunty along with a few things in the last 15 months and a lot of the songs resonated at different times with this. The ones below are at those times and probably a bit on the down side but still fantastic songs.

These guys are probably more on the heavier side of Music. The lyrics below don't show it but they are proably closer to Metallica than Creed.

Mostly because I love their sound and songs and lyrics and meanings behind them. Their entire catalogue is fantastic and most if not all songs resonate on different levels or reasons etc but some ones that have been fantastic are as follows:

One Day Remains Album:

In Loving Memory + Broken Wings

In Loving Memory Lyric: I never knew what it was to be alone, no ; 'Cause you were always there for me; You were always home waiting; But now I come home and it's not the same, no; It feels empty and alone; I can't believe you're gone

Broken Wings Lyrics- The things we hold; Are always first to go; And who's to say ;We won't end up alone

Blackbird Album:

Black Bird + Watch Over You (Live\Acoustic)

Black Bird Lyrics (Note - One of the greater guitar solo\duets I have ever heard) - Let the wind carry you home; Blackbird fly away; May you never be broken again;
Beyond the suffering you've known; I hope you find your way; May you never be broken again

Watch Over You Lyrics - I can't go on; And let you lose it all; It's more than I can take; Who'll ease your pain?; Ease your pain

AB III Album:

Words Darker Lyrics: Just don’t you lose hope; I swear I’d never dream that we’re alone; Now don’t you let go; I swear I still believe though I don’t know

Life Must go on Lyrics: Cause the sun always sets; The moon always falls; It feels like the end; Just pay no mind at all; And keep rolling; Rolling; Life must go on; It must go on

In the other thread I discussed writing, my other outlet is music and these songs help me with some of that.

If you get the chance PLEASE do listen to some of the songs above and some of the others on the Albums. Alternatively look up their Live in Amsterdam show on youtube.

What a wonderful world.

It reminds me of all the good things in life and why its good to be alive. The best two renditions are by Lois Armstrong (not to let Ah Ben be disappointed circa 1930) and Eva Casidy who was to sing it at her last public performance. It was also the inspiration for the thread I started of the same name.

When I feel down I put the headphones on and sit back to recharge to the tones of my favourite singers.
