let's play a fun game.

let's assume for this game, the definition of a separated bicycle lane is something like ....

1st-Street-NE-cycletrack-Washington-DC-b

or like

vancouver-bike-lane.jpg

and if separated bike lanes became the norm and were installed all throughout major cities, you, in your personal opinion as a car driver, a rate and tax payer, as someone who drives home drunk after playing golf, as a father of kids who ride bikes, what do you foresee as a consequence of installing these?

short term or long term or anything at all, what do you think could be possible consequences of this?

ready go!

the best answer and most correct answer wins a prize

  1. More accidents as governments compress roads to try and maximize space.
  2. The more knob headed elements of the cycling community would still ride on the road

other than that i like it.

Massively increased congestion as cars fight for half the road?

Cars and bicycles are a dangerous mix, as are pedestrians and bicycles.

Perhaps we should ban use of bicycles except where there's a dedicated lane for them.

But then, what about powered bicycles and scooters? Where do you draw the lines, both between vehicle types and on roads?

Something has to be done about peak hour traffic.

VTOL personal vehicles are now a reality. Car accidents will seem minor compared to what's coming.

No, I don't have answers. I've retired to the country and it's not my problem, unless I get nicked for DUI on the way home from golf.

Huge squeeze to fit them in - cities don't have extra space. If they will be basically everywhere you will have a new issue of dealing with the two sets of traffic crossing at intersections.

As a driver of a car watching bikes take away my space, and getting it for free might be a bit in the nose. I'd expect a fee for use. Potentially users could need to be licenced - for major road use but not local riding perhaps.

Pedestrians will need education in regard to the road rules with bikes - bikes aren't as reliable as cars at giving way to pedestrians.

I'm still waiting for my jet pack. We were promised them by numerous sci-fi series and cartoons in the 60's and 70's. It's now 2017 and the scientists are seriously letting us down.

Once we have them, no need for bikes or cars. Sorted.

Reduce road rage incidents, less news for ACA, means less of Tracy Grimshaw.

Creates more jobs for council maintenance staff

Create more roles for people , and I mean very smart people that design these fantastic ideas to relive inner city congestion

Plus the real kicker is that they can 'grab a latte' straight outta the baristas hand , just like they grab water on the Tour de Farce w/o stopping

Higher rates of cyclists as found in European cities that employ this kind of stuff.

This leads to a healthier, happier population and quite possibly less congestion on the roads.

Ideally, for shorter trips, more people would ride as it's safer for them.
Then again I don't think most people in European countries view cyclists as dirty little non rego paying speed humps like Australians tend to do
