Played Wednesday comp in the heat expecting 36 deg.

Started out ok but the curse of the long Curlewis rough and my balls getting lost in it struck on the 3rd hole! wipe. Another double followed and then I seemed to settle a little hitting fairways/gir etc even a birdie. 16 pts for the nine.

Managed to somehow birdie my tenth hole from the rough, wipe the next thanks to a sculled pitch from the middle of the fairway. Then we were called off for the heat. We kept playing which coincided with some of my best shots of the day. Came home with 21 pts to finish on 37pts which would have been good enough for a played to 10 I think.

Positives:1. some really crisp accurate irons

               2. 3 wood was out there and straight!

               3. putting was a lot better(no 3 putts)

               4. 3 birdies and 6 pars

Negatives: 1. driver was a bit wayward

                   2. 3 doubles

Played a social round at my old club with a couple of family members today,

Struck the ball really well once again however I was over drawing/hooking the ball a bit too much. finished with 40/38  78 off the stick 1 birdie, 9 pars and 2 doubles.

36 pts yesterday off the blue tees in hairy conditions wasn't bad. Bit of a mixed bag some great holes with a couple of shockers! Some great individual shots mixed with some poor shots.

Have noticed a hook developing into my game which is both concerning and not. The not cause i'm only missing left not the two way miss I've always fought. Think i was getting a bit handsy through the shot and not getting my body rotated through thus encouraging the neutral face through impact.

Positives:- Half of my drives were straight and out there! (managed to get one on the 409m 15th at 300m, only 110m in. true story :D )

               -  Putting is starting to come good. a more basic two finger overlap rather than a prair gripseems to give me more feel.

Negitives:- Chipping and pitching still need work

                - Inconsistent strike with irons

Stableford today, front nine started with promise but started to develop a push/block with most shots. A little confusing as over the last couple of rounds ive been hooking the ball. Anyway wheels completely fell off on 6 scoring 1 point over the next 3 holes. 14 point for the front nine.

Back nine started off with another mighty push and fare too say i was in all sorts!! Managed to hit a few good drives on the back nine and some good shots in between but just couldn't put a string of good shots/holes together. Think i did figure out where the pushes were coming from though. Had a fairway bunker shot on 14 and really concentrated on not swaying and getting it heavy ......result perfect hybrid shot. Anyway 17 on the back nine for 31points.

7 pars, 7 bogies, 2 doubles and 2 triples.

32 putts

The Good: Putting was mostly good

                 6 near perfect drivers

The Ugly: Still having bad groups of holes together

                Chipping/pitching was mostly shite

Strike on Irons were still not solid

Par round today, Started off having a hit at the new driving range(very nice facility).

Hitting fades on the range so of course i'd start with a dirty big snap hook!! That seemed to be the pattern for the day pull/hooks off the tee and toe strikes on iron shots. Recon i'm probably getting a bit steep.

First nine was -3 and fought back with +2 on the second nine for -1(+9 won the day  )

Positives: - Short game (only 2 bad chip/pitch shots)

                 - No 3 putts

                 - Scramling

Negatives: - Poor ball striking

Had another lesson on Friday, this time at the new range.

After a dozen iron shots we had a look at the footage and was pointed out that i was getting my right elbow trapped behind my body thus either flipping (hooking) or blocking it out right.

Irons:

  • Worked on what felt like taking the club back out side
  • Taking the club more up rather than round
  • At the top of the back swing keeping the left wrist flat and elbow pointing down rather than behind me
  • Down swing keeping the right elbow in front of me

This frees my arms up possibly giving me more club head speed. When performed right it gave me a high ball flight that starts right and draws back to target rather than starting at target and over drawing

Driver:

Same issue same fix. which seemed to cut out my miss left but i was hitting big blocks right which is a result of not wanting to hit the ball left i'm told. So coach put it too me how would you hit a draw? So the feeling was to trop the club in and hit from the inside?? that's what it felt like to me anyway...  result when getting it right was a straight ball flight. It feels like a reel whippy action though.

Also with both iron and driver i don't have to take the club as far back as i would normally try too.

Also had a look at my pitching. We worked on the same take away and on the longer shots the same elbow postion but the biggest this was to take the wrists out of the shot like Jason Day etc This give you a more repeatable shot distance etc

Anyway told me not to expect too much straight away as we've made some big changes need to practice what we worked on.

So comp round yesterday (and not expecting too much!!) Bit of a mix some of the old shots as well as some good shots with the new swing obviously working. Some good holes mixed  with some bad holes.

32 points

6/12 FIR

5/18 GIR

32 putts (2x3 putts)

1 birdie

7 pars

4 bogies

4 doubles

1 tripple

The Good: - Around 15-16 really good shots

-2 290m drives! (slightly down wind)

                  - Some real improvement with my pitching (front 9)

-Putting was solid (bar 2 hols)

The Ugly:  - Short game went to shite on the back nine

                 - Some of the old over drawing shots

                 - Bunker play

-After being pin high for 1 on the tenth hole(295m par 4) i didn't score  bladed pitch into bunker, bladed bunker shot back too where i was for 1 pitch back onto green, 2 putts!!!!!!!!(real ugly!)

So after a very average range session yesterday and some serious Youtubeing to find "the fix" it was OOM1 at Le Frog today. Fair too say i wasn't expecting much and early on i wasn't wrong. Some pretty average ball striking off both tee and fairway which was saved only by my red hot short game. Out in 43 (17pts) and in with 40 (21pts) so 83/13/70. Started to hit a few good shots together on the back nine which helped.

Think i've been over swinging on the back swing which then causes me too either come OTT or get the club trapped behind me. Need to work on not extending the lead wrist at the top and keep it flat to get a better swing path.

2 birdies

6 pars

8 bogies

1 double

1 triple

FIR 7/14

GIR 2/18 (ouch)

putts 25!

The good: -Was probably the best i've ever putted

                 - Bunker play once again really good a few sand saves

                 - Pitching is coming along nicely

The bad:   -Iron play or ball striking in general 2/18 !!!!

38 points with a wipe and 5 one pointers(2x4 pointers helps) and 2 lost balls.

Back to the coach last friday working on not getting the club stuck. Lots of half paced swings and working on getting the club into certain positions at different times in the swing. Big problem is me tucking in my right elbow at the top of the backswing. So having the elbow away from the body feels pretty foreign. Also having the club parallel/pointed at target when clubs at waist height feels wayyy out side.

Anyway by the end of the lesson was hitting the ball better (no two way miss) with bad shots mostly fading/cutting with the longer clubs. PLENTY TO WORK ON!!

Comp Saturday was a real mixed bag. Drive on 1 dead straight 260m tick! second shot heavy pull hook green side bunker (got stuck) cross!!!

Thats pretty much how the day went some good shots mixed with some bad ones, some good holes with some bad ones.

Once again my short game particularly chipping and pitching  were good, putting ok which saved my round.

83/12/71 (18/19= 37pts) Carn't get it down into the 70's

1 Birdie

8 Pars

7 Bogies

1 Double

1 Triple

FIR 5/14

GIR 10/18

Putts 34 (2x3 putts)

HC down to 10.0

If i could just cut out the big miss left off the Tee i could put some good scores in!!

If i could just cut out the big miss left off the Tee i could put some good scores in!!

For a quick tip ....... I'd focus on keeping the front shoulder pointing towards the target just a touch longer, as you move from your transition into your downswing.

That should give the arms time to drop to the inside, rather than move them outward and OTT.

Just my thoughts though ...... :D
