There is no course that can lay claim to being the best sand scrape course in Australia. They are an absolute abhorrent version of the game.

Yep, couldn't agree with me more.

Another update.....I have now played Maldon (Vic) today & it has just hosted the 2018 Vic Sand Greens Championships. The course was in great nick in Spring & the scrapes were perfect. Easily the best out of the 34 that I have now played.

2nd- Bannockburn (Vic)

3rd-Talbot (Vic)

4th- Walwa (Vic)

5th- Clunes (Vic)

Another one I quite like is Avoca. Cute little course and a great club - also handy that it is in the Pyrenese wine making area.

To my way of thinking there is only one golf course to consider for the best sandscrapes ...... Coober Pedy Opal Fields Golf Course. (And the only club in the world with reciprocal rights with St. Andrews.)

Truly one of the finest layouts I've ever played ...  :)

I agree. It's a good course. Obviously the fairways are gravel and the greens are sand but if you stuck grass on it and placed it near a capital there would be a line of people to play it. It is really well designed mostly around the sandstone hills. The driveable par 4 15th is as good a little par 4 as you'll find. And the greens haven't just been plonked at the end of each hole. They have been positioned and sloped to reward good strategy and "green" reading. The only negative for me is the fake grass you get with your green fee wasn't big enough and despite hitting my first shot off the grass well my 6 iron still had a little dent on the bottom. I teed it up for the rest of the game as I wasn't in a comp. But otherwise I would gladly play it again.

You needed to play them off the 2nd bottom groove ....... or so I'm reliably informed …  ;)

Hey GPJ,

Just wondering, if it has reciprocal rights with St. Andrews, and I have no reason to doubt it. Why don't we join up at Cooper Pedy before heading over to Scotland. Just checked their website and membership is $75 per year.

Also haven't played it but will do on my next trip through there.

Still love it. Just the audacity to claim reciprocals at St. Andrews and see how far you get you may not get the Old Course in September but would be fun to try.  Worth the membership.

Bannockburn is a ripping layout but the actual scrapes are a little light on foe actual sand. Fairways are mint though

Hate to ruin your parade guys but the reciprocal is only with a St Andrews 9 hole course, not the real deal!

This can happen from time to time on the scrape courses, if there has been recent heavy rain or storms
