Not sure if there is a thread for this or not.  Had a search but couldn't find anything. So wanted to find out what peoples thoughts are on a watch GPS.  I'm no where near probably the skill of even needing one of these but the birthday is coming up in 2 weeks and the misses asked me if i wanted one.

any ideas or thoughts are much appreciated... or if you can think of anything else i might like for my bday suggestions are welcome haha

OK.... AND GO...

Hey mate, bit busy so will be brief, but here goes

  1. Get the Garmin S2 - I have it, it's awesome
  2. Didn't think I could wear a watch while playing, but I can and don't even notice it
  3. Gives me front, middle and back of green - all I need
  4. It's accurate
  5. Saves me shots - I choose the right club for the shot
  6. You will benefit from one now at your level - see below re distances
  7. Golfbox is cheap and free delivery, GCO has best price maybe, even ask them difference between S1 and S2 as I saw that on special

* distances

By now or soon, you should know how far you hit each club.

  1. If you don't, then go to an empty park, with a bucket of balls and a 7 iron.
  2. Download a GPS app, like golfshot or a free one
  3. Hit 20 balls, walk out to them and measure distance around the middle or towards the longest ones, or the distance you feel comfortable hitting it to repeatedly
  4. Then with pen and paper, list clubs in descending order and write the distance for the 7 iron shot
  5. Then make every other one 10m either side of it eg;
  • 4 - 175m
  • 5 - 165m
  • 6 - 155m
  • 7 - 145m
  • 8 - 135m
  • 9 - 125m
  • w - 110m

When you have time, test all clubs if you want and adjust accordingly but 10m should be the benchmark difference

Hope this helps

That is how I worked out my distances.

Hardest thing I found after not playing for so long was how far I hit each club.

Like top said it's a good way to get a ball park figure and adjust as you go along.

GPS's are only good if you know how far you hit each club.

I wouldn't know to be honest.. But if I'm getting a gift I might as well get something that is useful

Max you need to change your avatar, people at work must be thinking I'm looking up questionable content! ALT + TAB becomes your friend but you have to be quick!

Spot on, you have to know your distances otherwise it's all hit and hope.

You'll hit further as you improve too.

Oh noob, sorry the S2 has lots of other features, not just front and back. I.e. it has a distance tracker, so yuou hit a ncie shot, then can measure it as you walk to the next shot.

Plus scoring etc too. I got it for my birthday, was around $280. The S1 is less

And you want to measure how far you carry the ball.

I check this when on the course on a flat hole and no wind.
Just measure to the pitch mark on the green or in the bunker haha.

Noob once you know your distances that will give you confidence and one less thing you have to worry about mate.
