No I haven't Rob …….. we haven't had a leftie in the shop to try.

I'm a slightly bigger fan of the M4 in general ...… over the M3 versions (which I don't rate at all). The M4 driver certainly sits a hell of a lot better than the M3 driver, which when you sit it down at address, is like a dog that you've just told to roll over.

As for me, anything more than 2 headcovers at the most in my bag, usually ends in tears. Going back to one headcover for my next round, as the 2I of goodness is due a run.

Do they still make 3 irons ?

Back in 1965 I hit my first, last and only perfect 3 iron. Funnily enough it's one of the very few shots I've remembered clearly.

Just too hard

Unfortunately anyone that has a modern 4 iron in their bag, really has a 3 iron + because the new jacked up lofts are so much stronger nowdays !

I doubt the 2 iron is going to make its way out of the bag when an opportunity for a bunted driver of goodness is on offer.

When it comes to gentlemen golfers of a certain age ........ they all seem to use the longest club in the bag on that 2nd hole ….... I just hadn't realised Goldy had reached that threshold yet ..  ;)

Update time once again ...... Thursday Stableford comp .....

And teeing off in our little group of 2, at the very head of the field, it was a perfect morning for golf.

I started with a solid bogey on the 1st, and then barely caught my 2nd hole tee shot (using 4 iron).

It's a bit rough when you need to "ping the flagstick" with the rangefinder for your birdie putt (of some 58m). I did though manage a nice half lob wedge shot to 2 feet and proceeded to "tap in" for my rather adventurous par, so no real damage done.

Onto the 3rd, and I hit a lowish drive up the hill and curling slightly leftward as desired, and it was okay in the end. A 215m 4 iron to green side fringe left ….. a cross green putt from the fringe for eagle curled to a spot a foot below the hole .. tap in birdie putt.

Four solid pars ensued until I was in the fairway of the 8th with 102 to the pin. I pulled my gap wedge approach shot badly and missed the green right ….. bogey, and no excuses available for that one.

I then 3 putted the ninth for another bogey . again, no excuses and not good. 20 points on the front half.

What was worse though (than 3 putting), was that the coffee machine in the pro shop was bereft of milk for my usual mid round cappuccino .. so it was a very muddy looking coffee that I was carrying out to the 10th tee.

And on that sour note, I pretty much topped my drive on the 10th ….. I recovered somewhat to hit 2 iron to the bottom of the hill, hit a fading 7 iron to the rear left hillside of the green . chip down to 3 feet and a nice par saver followed.

On the 11th, I blew my 5 iron high wide and very ugly indeed, and once again I was "pinging the flagstick" for my birdie putt …… 42m this time.

I managed a nice lob wedge chip but landed it on the fringe (about 2 feet from where I wanted to), and it just bobbled onto the green but didn't roll on. I did though pour the long, curling, par saver into the middle of the cup (it was either going in, or it was rolling past and probably off the other side of the green).

12 was a wasted opportunity from the middle of the fairway (bogey) missed the green, poor chip.

13 was a wipe ……. a bad choice of chipping option left me repeating the chip (and not putting), after a poor tee shot

14 ... Was a regulation par when I should have done better.

15 . My tee shot missed the green, my off green putt rolled past by about 8 feet, missed the return par saver.

16 ….. Hit a decent drive but put myself under a bush 82m out, and with a restricted back swing. My SW backswing clipped a branch, but I was undeterred (or under turd) …… and gripped on tight and stuck the shot to about 12 feet from the hole. A nicely paced birdie putt on the fast green curled in the right edge of the cup.

17 ….. My tee shot was cutting the dogleg corner, but didn't quite make it through. My approach wedge hit an overhanging branch and went 90 degrees leftward across the other side of the fairway. My ensueing 62m birdie putt, landed just shy of the green as intended and rolled up to about 12 feet. Missed the putt, and in for bogey.

18 ….. The 2 iron of leftwardness, as I may call it henceforth, put me very short and in not a good lie on the side of mound in thick rough. I hit the 2 iron again and caught another tree branch, leaving me with yet another long birdie putt, this time it was a solid 82m to the cup.

I hit the uphill SW nice and smooth, it landed on, but came up about 15 foot short. Missed the par saver and in for bogey, yet again.

So, a somewhat disappointing finish to an otherwise half decent round.

The final score ……. 78, or 36 points.

A few good chances slipped through my grasp, mainly due to lack of skill, and several bad shots were struck, some of which though, I thankfully glossed over nicely via a good recovery shot.

There were a few less than a dozen really bad ones today though …… so my game is on the right track, and I was thinking a bit more before swinging, and made several good choices out there, so its a step in the right direction.

So, I've got a few areas to work on in my game I reckon.

No. 1, is probably my irons, and in not getting ahead of the ball during my swing, as this leads to pushes leftward, eg on the 11th, and 13th today. When I get "ahead of the ball" on the downswing, the clubface into impact still open.

No. 2 … would be just remembering what parts of the course I can land my chip shots on, eg the fringes on both holes 11 and 12 will hold the ball and not let it release, so I need to fly those chips onto the green, whereas other holes will allow you to drop them just shy of the green and roll on. (after 7 or 8 years in playing the damned course, you'd think I'd know that by now?)

No. 3 … On the 4th hole, 2nd shot, never again play for a fade off the treeline right. (I have done that the last few times I've played this shot ...... and ended up in trouble leftward every time). Today I just manned up and hit a 5 iron with a touch of draw, aimed perfectly up the middle of the chute . and it went as desired, to perfect position in the fairway 100m out.

No. 4 ….. Stop having one really bad "topped" drive per round. I can generally get away with it on the par 5's, but not the par 4's, so I've just got to get it right each and every time. Something for me to really focus on and take note of with every driver "tee shot" going forward.

No. 5 …. Stop using different tee clubs in the 18th. Just hit a relaxed fade with driver ffs. The amount of times I've felt sorry for a club cause I've not used it all round, so I pull it out on 18 … only to have it shite in my face, well enough is enough. I just need a lazy half swing franciegayfade with driver, and I'll have wedge in hand for my approach shot, so just do it !!!

And that's golf done and dusted for another few days …..  :D
