Off to Brookwater today to see what changes they have made. Tough but at times spectacular course - looking forward to having a go at it again.

Hopefully I can keep my shots more on target today - I'll need to around there!

Brookwater was too much for me yesterday. Between awful putting and bunker play, and an unforgiving course I only came away with 28 points and gave myself 97 off the stick with a couple of pick ups.

5 pars 5 bogies 5 doubles 2 triples and a quad pickup

8/14 fairways - drove well a lot of the time but when you're off at Brooky then it costs you and I dropped 5 shots off the tee. But distance was very good with gps measured drives of:
265 on 1
272 on 4 (it's a bit of a cheat from way up high)
262 on 10
257 on 13.
But trees on 4
Through the fairway into trees on 11
4h pushed into bunker on 12
Driver pushed into bunker on 17
And then a huge push on 18 trying for a draw all cost me shots

3 GIR was very disappointing. Only cost me 3 shots directly but put huge pressure on my short game and it wasn't up for the challenge of those elephant graveyard greens!

2/14 up and down so half my dropped shots here. Bunkers constituted half of those on only 2 holes. The practice bunker had a thin layer over a hard base and they were coming out beautifully, but on the course they were deep and soft and I kept coming short of getting them out. Was a problem for the whole group - much swearing from the sand Sunday! :D

Lots and lots of putts. Didn't putt out every hole so can't say how many but allowing 2 for those would be 35 including 3 3 putts and a miss from 2ft. Hit many pulls on shorter putts so I'll be dragging out the practice mat this week.

So some good signs that the swing change is starting to get there but too inconsistent especially with the approach shots not findingbthe targets. A few far and few left a few right. Also a couple of times when I went for an specific shape and double crossed myself cost me. And lag putting absolutely cost me.

One good thing was I realised I've been getting too steep in the bunkers and burying the club. Was emphasised at Brooky because you could bury it way deep. Will need to shallow it out a bit for Nationals.

Weeti, it's a matter of matching the bounce with the texture of the sand. If it's soft and fluffy, you want heaps of bounce. If it's hard pan you want minimal bounce. More important than loft. You may need to vary your stroke to achieve the right bounce.

Yeah got that OB - change between SW and LW when it's hard

Coming in too steep has me sending too much energy down into the sand rather than forward so the ball comes out soft. In the deep soft sand at Brooky there wants enough energy to carry the ball out even with a big swing.

I've been playing it almost like a punch shot!

Another rubbish performance today at Gainsborough Greens. 44 and 47 for 16 and 14 30 off 13.

Greens were very slow and I probably managed 1 good putt all day. Most bunkers were concrete- wedges barely even left a mark. So lots of overly long shots resulted:

Driver was mint most of the day, and long with plenty in the 250's and a couple in the 260's.

Approach shots not so good and the short game wasn't in saving mode.

Flag drops next week. Signs aren't good.

5 pars 8 bogies 4 doubles 1 triple

6/14 fairways - had 4 drives of 250+ today. Only dropped shot was when I double crossed myself playing for a fade that pull drew left into trees and left me no shot. Plenty of non driver holes too as the course is short off the whites.

4 GIR - wasn't good with the approach shots. Sometimes due to issues off the tee but plenty of issues with my line and how well I (didn't) play the wind. Dropped 4 shots due to an 8i on a par 3 pushed and wet, a LW pitch from 60m fat and wet, a gap wedge pushed and wind blown long into a bunker and very short sided.

3/13 up and down - sand was horrible for me today - found too many that were crispy balls of sand on cement and went over the green or rolled over it. Cost me a tonne of shots today. Only had 2 bunkers that were soft - 1 up and down and the next I made the mistake of underestimating the softness and my LW wasn't hard enough and buried. I took a 4h and a putter from bunkers today and got them both out (even though I hit the 4h a bit fat - they were more hardpan than bunkers). Texas wedges and chips were mostly short today on the super slow greens.

33 putts - 3 shots dropped from 2 x 3 putts and a missed 3 footer that I wussed. Left almost everything short except a couple I blew past! :) Of course!

Got a mid flag dropping at Royal Pines next weekend - doesn't look good unless things start to click a bit more. At least the bunkers there should require explosion shots!

Thinking about yesterday apart from the driving there were some positives in regard to my chipping. Although I didn't get many up and downs I struck my chips well yesterday (apart from the fat 4 hybrid from the bunker I suppose :) ).

On 1 my GW chip was how I wanted to hit it but didn't roll out as expected

On 3 my 5i chip was up and down for bogie

On 7 my GW punch from under a tree from 30m out to 4 feet almost got me a birdie

On 10 my second LW pitch was to 12 ft and got it down for bogie

On 11 my 8i chip and run from 20+m out was short but I hit it clean

On 12 my 8i chip from 60m out was again a bit short but wasn't too bad

On 14 my bunker shot (from actual sand) was to 3ft and down

On 16 my 5i chip was to 4ft and down

So those were decent to good results. With only 4 GIR there was lots of pressure on the short game and although it failed from the hard bunkers and the texas wedges weren't great the chip and runs weren't too bad.

Gotta find some positives!

Good range session tonight. Got a better handle on the takeaway. Was hitting it reasonably straight reasonably consistently.

Playing Royal Pines Sunday 4BBB - love it - can't wait

I can really see the difference with the backswing changes to get my hands higher at the top - above my shoulder rather than behind it. While I can still hit the ball with plenty of bend it is obviously a face issue - the path is much straighter.

I've gone back to the putt chip approach last few games. And I fully take that approach using my putting grip which only has the left hand on the handle, the right hand is on the left hand. At first it doesn't feel secure on a wedge or iron grip which is so much thinner than a putter grip. But it works fine and I can hit a 20m chip with a lob wedge no worries with that grip. Maybe longer but I don't have space to practice that.

Putt chip has the club sitting up on its toe and hitting with the toe so that's takes a bit of getting used to and confident with. But it has the advantage of having less club contacting the group if you're a little fat. And the putt type swing should be more reliable as it's simpler. Worked pretty well last two rounds from a contact point of view but distance control still has a long way to go. RP's greens should be a lot fatsrer than Brookwater and Gainsborough Greebs have been which is usually better for me for putting and chipping. We will see. I like the course so I'm looking forward to it a lot.
