Well you've improved your sleep heaps

But it does feel nice to have some sort of quality back in

Gotta kill these chipping yips though - they suck

Range tonight

Was a rushed session as I was so late at work, but any is better than none

Ball striking was so so - too many pushes, but the good swings are getting back to that straighter shot shape I want without the spinning out I used to need to do

Barely time for a chip, and enough said ...

Did a bit of bunker work and that was very good - only really two things I have to remember in teh sand - pick the right tool, and don't lose my focus on the spot in the sand I want to hit

Will see how it translates on Sunday at Redcliffe - one of my favourite SEQ courses

Frustrating round at Redcliffe on Sunday - second round of the Brisbane Fairways Club Championships and I was not aiming for a 92 net 78 - 7 over result, but that is what I had

1 birdie 5 pars 5 bogies 4 doubles 3 triples

4/14 fairways - and lots of time spent in trees off the tee (5 times) and wet (2 times) plus 1 time with no stance as I was too close to a fairway bunker. Dropped 4 shots off the tee.

3 GIR - and blew hances with PW and AW that should have been sitters. 4 more shots dropped here.

6/16 up and down - including 3 from a bunker on the 5th that was very deep and soft - an exception to what were otherwise hard firm and shallow bunkers. Also 1 FedEx. Was yippy again; even the birdie was a lucky thin AW chip that went in.

30 putts - dropped 3 shots here - 2 were up and downs I should have got down, and 1 3 putt on the last from a long way down a long slope. Was pulling a lot of putts Sunday - just wasn't on line.

Overall was crappy, but Piggy was crappier so I'm not the poo.

Next weekend at Southport I better improve, or no Club Champ this year.

Range tonight and it was a bit blah

At the end started chipping better but remembered Sandy talking about his piston putting approach and thought I'd give something similar a go

So didnsome chipping feeling like I was just moving my straight left arm and club with my right arm moving back and forth; wasn't really a piston movement (like starting a lawnmower would be) but felt like my right arm was moving the club back and then pushing it through

The ball reacted wel to this treatment and it made keeping the lower body still a breeze

Ran out of time and balls but when I got home I did some mirror work and realised I was just doing what was called Hitting here in TGM days - a swing dominated by the movement or the right arm - or at least feeling like that

I'd tried to do it in the past but never seemed to get the idea of it - but by accident tonight I may have stumbled across what it feels like to me

Feels very simple - in my case just moving the upper right arm back for the backswing, and then push it back down and through to hit the ball - wish I had time to try it again at the range before Southport on Sunday - maybe have a chance before the game as there is a range there

I now see why the Paul's always talked about Hitting as a simple action - but I never got the feel for it and the right forearm takeaway they taught was not something I was able to implement effectively. But basing it on the sort of upper arm approach I've been using for years now seemed to work for me. Whether it will work on the course is another matter. Time will tell.

So driver is very poor, last time I picked on your driving you said it was going good but I disagreed then too !

Chipping it out of the trees all day won't help you make a score, so you need to work out how to find the fairways with one solid swing shape. This will take one side of the course out of play and let you gain some sort of game plan to hit more greens and then lower your overall score.

Think Bubba and setup for either a cut or a hook and then execute, using as much angle and fairway as required to shape it into the short-grass.

Take more loft, say 5 wood or even hit an iron to get into position on the shorter 4's and 5's, even if you can't get home in regulation.

Drive for dough and putt for show !

Draw will be the shape Jon - that's my natural shape - can't hit a fade with any reliability

Can hit a push fade though - which double crosses my allowed for draw! Had a few of those Sunday

I've been trying to set up for the draw but often it's the double cross or else too much draw and it hooks into the rubbish left

Have to sort it out - and I am taking less than driver a lot these days for shorter par 4s and par 5s I can't go for in 2 - although I can stuff them up pretty well too (like hitting a 7i big game push straight into the bamboo on the 1st at Palm Meadows), but I do leave driver in the bag a lot these days

Much better today with BF at Southport for round 3 of the club champs - stroke handicap comp

Started on the par 34 back and had 40
Then looked like I might go very well on the par 37 front until a poor double double finish for 42
82 net 68 - 3 under and 39 points

1 birdie 7 pars 8 bogies 2 doubles

7/14 fairways - drove ok apart from 3 stand up hooks which cost me 2 shots

5 GIR - dropped 4 shots here - not too bad but still quite a lot of room for improvement - was near the green in reg only 13 times

6/11 up and down - dropped 5 shots here - mostly disappointed in some wussy Texas wedges

31 putts - 1 x 3 putt on the second last hole

A few fat and offline shots with short irons and wedges cost me what could have finally been a 7# score but was good to feel like I could score that again

Short game chipping today was mostly 8i with a few others mixed in, in addition to 4 Texas wedges (only 2 of those down).

Took 8i a 2 times from well short of the green that all came off ok but only one got down.

Others were:
17 8i chip from 20m that finished 5ft short but missed the putt was over a hill and was a really good chip
18 8i chip from valley of death to 15 ft could have been even better but for a nasty kick off the first bounce, but got it down
1 PW chip to 3 ft was a little thin but good

4 bunker shots
2 plugged deep but got them out well
1 to 12ft and just missed the putt was out of very wet muddy sand
1 rolled off the green but was a decent shot given what I had to work with and the Texas was gettable
But I didn't

Range tonight as Wednesday is a public holiday

Took a bit to work out what I'd been doing well on. Sunday and repeat it - took over 100 balls actually and was actually a bit of a break to chip that reminded me

But then was hitting them well with slight push to slight draws the general order of the day

Chipped ok and practiced the Gap Wedge a fair bit to use for chip and ins around the green to carry a bit of rougher grass - worked well in practice

No golf this weekend as I'm camping
