Surprisingly to me, the waiting list is filling up again with about 220+ on there at the moment. I was thinking come September after the renewal period that might have been cleared out but the club seems to be finding more people to come on board.

If you want to join, 5 and 6 day memberships are available immediately last I heard with 7 day memberships perhaps a 3 month wait :)

We were told about that, and my mates and i discussed it at length  - and still are - the 40 min drive may be the sticking point.

Also, weve heard there may be a cheap membership avail at Herritage ($1500) but no one seems to be able to show me where

deal has come from.

Yeah that's the worst part of the course, the bunkers are going to be like that for some years yet :( We had a local rule for a while where anywhere within 2 club lengths of any lip of a bunker was GUR, but due to the confusion of how relief was to be taken that rule has been scrapped. So if you're buried under the lip, instead of taking relief to a fried egg halfway down the face, you have to take an unplayable.

I thought they have gotten better recently.
Still to much sand, but better

We were on holes 1 - 18, quite liked the course, a few of them inparticular (par 3 17th up the hill stands out in my mind, and a par 4 3rd along the fence with water on the left) - but wondering what the par 3 course is like, we could see it when we played the 11th I think it was.

Perhaps you can buy an existing membership for that price. Latest is that the courses are improving with $900K spent since January 2017. Another $700K budgeted by owner to spend by Nov. 2017.  Aim of owners is to have 150 new or old members (with certain incentives like credits to house account) to return by end Nov. 2017.

Old members, drop in and have a look.
