Tips for lessons

So I’ve had enough of hacking around the course 10 times a year and have decided 2013 is the year I’m going to really work on consistent play and lessons to improve. I am hoping to start lessons with Andrew Mowatt at royal fremantle here in perth in the next couple of weeks. He is just round the corner from me and has a good rep. I would like to know if there are any questions i should ask or things I should prepare for with the lessons?

Am I real novice so just want to go in with the right mindset and make the teachers job as easy as possible!

Start by putting

Then chipping

Then progress to wedge play – irons

Then driver …

Get a lesson and get fitted for clubs

Enjoy the game!

Golf is only a game…Yeah right who are you kidding?

Learn from my mistakes and save yourself decades of frustration. Ask him to explain, in detail, how to pivot so you don’t come “over the top”.

best of luck

Fan of:
Stan Utley putting and short game
TGM hitting, as explained by Peter Croker / Paul Hart, Lynn Blake.
New ball flight rules
Zen golf
Rory McIlroy, I.K.Kim swings
Fast play, Stableford scoring, windy conditions

really bad advice
you havent even seen him swing so you dont need to know this at all, once you start analyzing shit you will be like VC and never progress

make sure you two guys click as the relationship is very important
also try and get an outline off the path you will take

any one else heading home to get married??

i think they would be oh i don’t know..
Vanilla flavored i reckon

Goneski

Go in with an open mind and be prepared to take little steps to improvement. You might feel like you are going backwards at times but if you are relearning how to hit the ball the steps backward will move forward and it might be one step back and two forward. Don’t expect miracles and in 12 months you should see the improvements in your game.

What are playing lessons like?
I imagine playing lessons could be instructive to both player and coach… the coach could see the player in action, in context, and see all (or most) of what the player needs in terms of help – which in turn, saves the player from guessing what he/she may think they need.

Too much slow play means that golf has a wait problem

Mekat, I had my first playing lesson last week and it was the best lesson I have ever had with my coach. You can stand there and hit shot after shot for 30-60min and think everything is going well as the repatition is masking some of the problems.

With a playing lesson, the coach can see how you switch on and off between shots and they can see where the problems lie a little easier, plus you learn to play whats in front of you rather than a few shots/holes in front of you.

This is what I found anyway, it may vary from person to person.

Id like him to show some interest and respect for yr committment to practice and in yr progress. Kiwi is correct (would you doubt it:-))find out his expectations so you know your path. Good luck!

boardrider, just do your best to carry out the actions your coach describes. Often, they might seem awkward and perhaps uncomfortable. That’s because that movement might be ‘foreign’ to you.

I find it helpful to know why a particular action should be taken – it helps overcome any scepticism I may have about doing that action.

Thanks for all the advice. I guess the overarching theme is just make sure you get along with the bloke, don’t over think things, and follow the advice your paying him for ie. let him do his job!

Really looking forward to having a bit of direction with my golf, I think I will enjoy playing and practicing that much more when I have a bit more of a defined ‘plan’ in place

It is important to avoid being too mechanical…
I putt like a 2-stroke motor.

mekat
has nothing to do with what needs correcting
i have played a fair bit with my coach
a playing lesson is more about adopting the correct strategy round the course so you can stay away from high scores and play to your handicap not so much how good you are or aren’t
