Take regular lessons from a pro.
I don’t agree that fairways is the key stat. I usually hit only about 50% at best but as someone else pointed out it’s about not being in trouble: missing fairway on the side that gives the best angle and being in light rough is not bad in my books.

Getting up and down around the green is key to low scores.

Banish the three putts.

Take regular lessons from a pro. Once your game is solid enough you’ll be hitting below 10 regularly then course management is probably the next best step to lowering that further.

My 2 cents.

Did I mention taking regular lessons from a pro?

Max,

I don’t think of fairways as a “key stat” ...... it’s just usually the best, and easiest place to hit you’re next shot from.

It’s much easier for instance to make par consistently from the fairway, than it is from the rough.

I can have the best up and down game from around the green, but if I’m hitting one sideways out of the trees 250m away back up the fairway on each hole, there’s no way I’d ever get to single figures.

GPJ: agreed.

It all depends on the course really. Tight tree lined courses and links with rough up to your armpits: yes you need to be on the fairways. Other courses with short rough and less trees it is less of an issue.

Being in the trees is one thing, being a couple of meters off the fairway in light rough with a clear shot at the green and a good angle is another.

In an ideal world yes you’re looking for fairways and greens. Ultimately though I think you can easily reach single figures hitting little of both. Just my take, and as mentioned above it is really dependent on the type of course you play.

I can/would be considered to have a great short game, without a doubt it is my strength around the course. I also have a great recovery game, being able to manufacture shots from less than favourable spots on and around the course.

I come to my conclusion through 30 years of golf and through all those years, I can honestly say I rarely “score” well if i have not driven the ball well on that day. On the flip side I have often scored ok on days where say my short game or putting has been off. But not the other way around.

Each to their own, but that is how I have come to my conclusion. If i hit fairways (ball in play) most of the day, even if the putts are not dropping, i seem to score pretty well.

Hackpro, when you say driven well are you referring more so to distance or the fact you hit fairway? Cheers

Thanks for the reply HackPro. If I can also ask… What is ‘not long’?
I hit my 3 wood fairly accurately and get 210-230 out of it.

i would hit my 3 wood 230 also average…..(although I dont hit a 3wood)

i have a 250mt average off the tee

yep can get some out there 285-290 and yep can get some out there 225, but most common solid drive is the 245-260mark

well today went against what I was saying….... LOL

drove the ball pretty well was 1 under through 5 with a 6 foot lipout , then to hit just about every fairway bunker, coupled with a creamed drive and PW shank down nine saw me produce 6 straight bogeys 4 lipouts on the back nine, pretty much every fairway bunker, 2 more near necks

talk about gassing it

I have a question for the single digit player.

How many bogeys can you have in a round still playing to single figures?

Also.

If you play to 10 over the card, are you really a single figure player?

Also.

Do you score better in shorts or pants?

Don’t see many Pros in shorts.

And;

If you could gain 20 meters on your driver, would you give me $50?

Not forgetting;

Can you be overweight and maintain a single figure HC?

Had a blinder on Tuesday with the lads. Had 4 birdies in 6 holes and bogied a couple coming in, over 9 holes. Putting was pure, like in a dream. I put a different putter in the bag on Saturday and putted like a dork. Forgot to take it out and it becomes a magic instrument. Crazy game.

That reminds me.

Do you have to use a Scotty Cameron putter to reach single figures?
