Having come in 4 shots on my h’cap in 2012 largely off the back of being super consistent off the tee, my next focus is hitting GIR , bugga me if i hit as many greens as i did fairways id be dangerous. A couple of lessons into a 4 lesson block on my iron play, ive got renewed confidence where im at, already striking with more consitency and optimistic i can finish 2013 off around 12. Hitting down on the pill and solid legs is my theme right now. Bring on 2013

Nice one Dave …... And you have summed up the key to your improvement above .......... “Hitting down on the pill”. Off the tee you are fine …....... you’re short game around the greens is not bad at all …........ and your putting is slowly improving (you can’t always belt them …. sometimes you have to be careful on your distance control) Hitting down on the pill is the key to your game, and it’s you’re irons as you know. Get that one thing right buddy …. and you will drops shots so bloody fast off that handicap. Of course I’ve told you that already, but you went and saw a coach anyway ….... don’t you trust me? Where’s the love buddy? I wouldn’t steer you wrong… So yeah, get the weight onto the front foot at impact ........ stop looking up to see the ball …..... and carve out some of that turf post impact. Looking forward to seeing you kick my butt on Sunday’s buddy … so get your head down and keep working it, and you’ll get there.

Cheers gaz, ive been focussing on the solid base after the comments you and DD made recently on another thread and have noticed quite a change in getting that weight transfer over and a much better strike in the ball….been on hols this week with a few sessions at a local range, looking forward to a R soon at beacy

Hey Wasabi Something I have incorporated into my swing is to monitor the pressure under my left foot. It helps me to retain balance by not allowing the weight to stray too far from being centred just back of the ball of my foot. But I also monitor feeling the weight come off the forward foot on my back swing and then pushing down on my forward foot in the downswing. Might be something that you can use as a drill or even as something to keep the conscious mind occupied during the swing? BTW I am not specifically trying to start my down swing with a big weight shift back into the left foot or anything like that, but I definitely ensure that the pressure starts building back up into the front foot as soon as or even just before the back swing finishes. Good luck getting that handicap under the teens.

cheers weeti, I cant believe for so long I underestimated just how critical weight transfer was in achieving a pure strike. you make a good point…my main focus right now is solid legs and and a more even tempo to avoid leaving the weight on back foot…so far postive and encouraging results…good golfing

Hey Wasabi, where you mention about solid base and hitting down on the pill what do you mean. I strike my irons well but rarely take a divot and I want to try to hit down and through the ball more. You could say I am a picker upperer of the ball, with the occasionally hit thin shot. Except for my pitching wedge I seem to hit down better with that than anything. I think partially its due to confidence with that club. I feel like I dont have to trace the ball with my eyes so I stay over it. Plus my swing is generally much more controlled and I get a better “sequence” during my swing. But I am keen as to what you mean by more solid base.

Good question kev, i changed my swing 12 months ago from john daly esque to. A 3/4 swing. In doing so my new swing arc was quite shallow, which suited the driver and i made massive progress there however no good at all for irons. I would typically hit alot of fat or thin shots. Scooping as you would say. I went to the local pro at Beacy and he highlighted a couple of causes of this. 1. Shallow or flat swing So a few things ive been working on to promote a steeper attack on the pill and get the weight transferred are A steeper takeaway rather than sweeping the club back. A couple of degree more flex in the knees to keep legs solid as once weight goes full onto back foot, bloody hard to get back and generally leads to piss poor contact And lastly a more gentle tempo Ive definitely made progress and striking the ball much cleaner than i ever have and actually come in a couple a shots to 15. Bare in mind this s one hacker talking to another, some of the brethren feel free to chip in and add some more technical speak Good golfing mate, hope to see you at event soon

Makes sense Wasabi. Like I was saying with my pitching wedge I am more confident and stay down and over the ball longer. Take a much mroe relaxed/controlled swing and tend to get quite a good pinch feel when striking well. Where as with other irons I tend to, for want of a better term, swipe at the ball. I am awkward with mt weight transfer too. Simply due to the old broken leg occasionally it just siezes and I can trun over on it.

With holidays coming to an end thought id sneak a praccy round in at the home of golf. With 30+ temperatures and at 300pm i was able to jump on the first and send an opening drive soaring right down the middle leaving me about 100 out, 9i approach was just wide of greenside mound chipped on and closed out for a 5 Standing on the elevated tee of the Par 3 second, i thought id play around with the various balls in my bag. With my reg 4hy i put the noodle on the dance floor, she bounced and ran. hmmmm reached for a shrixon soft, flighted in the 4hy almost pin high, and it stayed dead. Played rest of round with a couple soft pills , skipped a hole Playing pretty well at the mo, finding im reaching for the GW quite a bit, striking it cleanly but too often a bit off in accuracy..needs more practise

sounds like the slopes are getting the better of you rob since saddling up at Beasty. Let me pass on one hacker tip for harsh downhill shots which I just could not play. Use a lofted club7/8…90% weight on front foot, ball slightly behind centre. Its helped me plenty…Try that for a while before you get to Gaz’s level of excellence in 3w off a 90deg slope…good golfing mate

Dave …..... by the sounds of things your game is coming along in leaps and bounds ........... down to 15 now hey …..... bloody great effort there buddy, and a great ROI for your lessons!! No doubt if you stick with your learning, you’ve got lots more southward movement of the handicap to come. With hitting GW, (or any wedge for that matter) ... we can get caught up at times, in trying to hit them flat out once we know how far we hit them. Going flat out with a wedge though can lead to a loss of accuracy (talking from experience now) particularly if we are trying to gain a couple of metres at the same time …...... when really accuracy should be the only criteria with a wedge in hand. What I find works for me, is in just taking that one club more and putting a smooth swing on it, knowing that I now have the distance covered, and I can just focus on accuracy, and not worry about trying to hit it hard. A lot of the time at Beacy I find myself about 100m out ….. which is a full GW for me. If there is any slope, or wind involved in the shot, then I’ll definitely go with a PW (110m), and just put a smooth swing on it, instead of a flat out one. I reckon I now hit about half the 100m shots around Beacy with PW instead of GW, as I too suffered from accuracy problems with GW. I just find a PW is much more accurate doing that, than in trying to get a full GW. I don’t know if your accuracy issue is from trying to go flat out or not, but thought I’d drop that in for you …...... just in case buddy. Really looking forward to seeing your “new” iron swing by the way Dave, next time we tee it up together. (I’m going to see if there is a spot free for Sunday’s comp this afternoon)
