Ok it’s 5:15 and I’m getting ready to head off to Kogarah.

Some objectives:

—get a birdie
—try and not pull hook irons
—keep calm
—get at most 1 over on the two hole stretch 1 and 2 (both easy par 5s that I usually butcher)
—get 16 points on the front nine
—get 32+ points overall
—take advantage of the holes where I get a shot back.

I have a feeling that I can smash this course. It just has not materialised yet. Maybe today?

Ok well I pulled off someof my objectives for today:

—I got two birdies (one being a 2 putt)
—I hooked bunch of irons, and that cost me a lot of shots
—I kinda kept calm..
—1 under on the 1-2 hole stretch
—14 points only on the front 9. I lost the plot for about 5 holes having 5 one-pointers and a wipe
—ended up with 34 pts with a strong bacck 9
—mostly did OK on the tougher hooles being 1 point above average

We teed off from the 10th which is tough as the 10th is a 170m par 3. I smashed those 9 though ending up 2 over with 20 points with a double bogey on the 18th. Lost it mid way the front 9 stretch though, mostly due to poor iron play. I need to sort that out.

Ended up with the following:

—7 GIR
—4/12 FIR
—31 putts
—2 birds, 9 pars, 4 bogeys and 3 doubles
—4/11 up and downs.
—80 off the stick on a par 72

Playing a quick round tomorrow morning at Eastlakes. Not a comp unfortunately so I’ll get to do a bit of practice.

Not much on the objectives front if not to practice my short irons from 110m in and distance control in chip and pitch shots.

Who knows maybe even get a couple of birdies?

Should be fun.

Have fun

Max something worth trying as it worked for me…on all short irons 8i-flop wedge I hit out on, say 4 o’clock 10 o clock.
With driver I feel as though I hit 3 o’clock 9 o’clock. Just a thought mate. When I do this I don’t pull them as if the face is closed when u hit out on them worst case scenario they will draw and only slightly as the back spin overrides the side spin.

Definition of insanity…thinking that u can be a good parent and decrease ur handicap at the same time!

hey deepdivot, what exactly do you mean? Do you mean striking the ball steeper as opposed to inside the swing plane?

No mate not steeper just when u look down at the ball imagine a line through the ball. If 3 o’clock – 9 o’clock was a straight line to the target then 4-10 would be as the TGM guys say ‘out to right field’ try and swing ur club head through impact on that imaginary line. It stops the pull with the short irons.

ok much clearer now. I’ll try that tomorrow. I have been trying to compensate for the draws by hitting more on a 4-10 line lately.

I’ll toy around with it tomorrow and tell you how it goes.

Ok it went alrght today.

First the irons: I played by myself on a drizzly Monday morning so not to omany ppl out. every now and then I’d drop 3 or 4 balls and try some irons, following deep divot’s advice:

PW: 3 / 3 were good
8 iron: 9 / 11 were good
6 iron: 2 / 7 only.

All in all that’s 66% good controlled irons. Not bad, not great but it’s a start.

Then the round(s). I played two balls as the course was more or less empty. I only played one on the three holes were I was called through by the other punters out there.

I started off pretty hot being even par after 5 holes on my second ball and 3 under par after 5 on my first. Then things started going slightly astray and I finished with these stats:

Ball 1:
—9 GIR
—6/14 FIR
—25 putts (with two hole outs and a three putt)
—5/9 up and downs
—4 birdies, 9 pars, 5 bogeys
—73 off stick

Ball 2:
—10 GIR
—6/14 FIR
—33 putts
—2/8 scrambling
—2 birdies (including a two-putt)
—10 pars
—6 bogeys
—76 shots

I did leave some shots out there including two missed birdie putts, a 5-footer and a 2-footer. Also had a three putt on what should have been a good birdie opp.

What I’ll remember from this round is the good short iron play (SW through 7) above that it was veering well to the left. The total scores are good, but thene again they’re not worth much this being a social round without the added pressure of slow competition play.

Deepdivot: your tips helped for the short irons, less so for the longer ones. I’ll keep trying though!

That’s great bud, I was only tipping on the short ones hahahahah the mid to long irons, I don’t hit out on as much but I’m not giving any advice on the mid to longs as I struggle with them too.

booked in for a lesson with my pro tomorrow.

Objective here is to get 2 tips on how to hit my irons straight(er).

Had a very instructive lesson with my pro today.

Minor changes on the setup so those should be fairly quick to incorporate. I’ll try them out on the course tomorrow at the open comp at Bonnie Dune.

I don’t have high hopes in terms of scoring as playing after a lesson is usually pretty disastrous, but I’ll stay positive aim for the following:

—less pulled irons
—30+ points
—a birdie?
—hitting at least two of the par three greens.

Nice day out at Bonnie Dune. The wind was out too making some holes interesting to sat the least.

Good news is that I only pulled one iron shot all day so I’m really happy about that. Didn’t get much going during the round getting a lot of 2 pointers. Did manage to lose two balls on the same hole for the only wipe of the day.

All in all following numbers:

33 pt stableford (should be equivalent to 79)
6 GIR
5 Fairways (all others missed left)
32 putts
1 birdie
1 double bogey
8 pars 8 bogeys

Other noticeable facts:
—Hit the pin with an approach from 50m out
—Bob hawke nearly mistakenly hit my ball

Great short game mate, if I hit 6 GIR I would shoot 90.
Watch out for bob he pinches people’s beer aswell.
