I’ve always had a fondness for Beacy, Dave …...... just never made it official until now. The beloved and I as you know, enjoy our relaxed Sunday games up there, and have done for a while. Prior to that, I quite often used to play up there, back in the days when there were the two full courses …........ shame we don’t have the Lakes back 9, as they had a couple of geat long par 4’s and a par 5 that I loved to let er rip on. I must say I’m enjoying finishing up work mid afternoon and hitting the first tee just after 3 … it’s a great time of day to have a hit and it’s pretty quiet most days.

Update time now from last night’s practice 9. The course over the last couple of days of sun and wind is starting to dry out, and the greens are settling down again after their recent coring and sanding. 1st hole 367m Par 4. A Francie special with the driver to just around the slight dogleg left corner, leaving 98m to the green. Missed just short and right, (bastard big jessie of a shot) ... chip onto green and 2 putts for a 5…..... bummer 2nd hole 207m Par 3 . (playing to 170) Nice drawn 5 iron to back right of green’s fringe …....... 2 putt par. 3rd Hole 447m Par 5 ….... Francie special again off the tee, up the hill and curving left around the dogleg. Left with 198m to the green’s front edge. Draw shot with a 4 iron ….... a thing of beauty, landed within six feet of the pin, but rolled just over the back and got caught up in the grass halfway down the steep slope. Chip shot back up and on, missed the birdie putt . tap in par. Note to self ….. 5 iron in next time. 4th hole 491m Par 5 …...... Draw shot with driver to right hand side just over the brow of the hill …... 216 to go. “3 wood time” (after playing it as a 3 shotter previously). Hit a nice one off the deck aiming slightly right of centre. Walked the long walk up and over the hill to find the ball sitting nicely just on the low side of the green …...... two putt birdie 4. Nice!!! 5th hole 317m Par 4 ….... Francie 4 iron to centre right of fairway. 9 iron to just short of green ….. chip on 2 putt bogey. (Chip shot let me down slightly along with the 1st putt) 6th hole 129m Par 3 …..... 8 iron off the deck to the left side of green …. 2 putts (lipout birdie)... so close. For some reason …....... putting a tee under my ball at this hole makes me pull them right .. so “no tease” for me, from now on. 7th hole 358m Par 4 …....... Immaculate drive of distinction drawing perfectly to the dogleg right rough and then beyond once it came back to terra firma. Ball finished centre fairway high and long around the dogleg leaving me with a 60 metre lob wedge to go. Had the wedgeshot perfectly on line with the flag, but dropped it six feet short. Uphill 6 footer went 6 foot six, but just curled leftward to miss the edge … tap in par, bugger, I knew it was going to break slightly left, but never hit it on the correct line!!! 8th hole 343m Par 4 … A Francie special of the highest order to the left hand side of the fairway left me with 108m in, so a choked down gap wedge followed, leaving me on the left fringe …..... and then 2 putts down the slope for par. 9th hole 316m Par 4 …..... The smoothest, easiest high draw shot of perfection ever hit, that just went boom off the clubface, curling perfectly in the air, but landed softly on the upslope and got no run whatsoever …..... right side of fairway . no overhanging trees to worry about. That left me with 40 metre lob wedge onto the green. Nice chip …... uphill left to right putt to follow …..... Missed another opportunity with Victoria, to finally leave me a couple of inches tap in for par. Finished one over for the 9 holes ….... but more importantly, I hit some very good solid shots with my irons (not too many big girl’s blouse efforts), and the driver and putter continue to work solidly. Celebrated by taking the beloved out to dinner at one of the local cafe’s, for a fine feed and a couple of Porphyry Pearls.

Mate I’ve worked out why the course is shorter for you than me, The lowest club I’ve ever gone into the 7th with is a 6 iron, whats a lob wedge???? I use that to chip BACK on to that green after my putt runs halfway back down the hill. Well done on the +1. great effort.

Sounds like one of those relaxed rounds that always gives a good score, gaz. No presssure and you seem to score better. Not sure if you saw my other post about yesterday but played our last round at Rossdale with VPGC. Very average condition considering and I wont miss playing there anymore. Had the pressure of the doubles final and going into it I had the memory of struggling with the driver the week before at Churchill. Hit 12 fairways and a couple just off. Just couldn’t hit the irons and wasted some good opportunities…............a bit like your round last week.

Don’t peak to early, big fella. Time your run to Langy in 9 days time. You know it makes sense.
Shot more than 36 points in an OOM day….seriously. |

Playing like that Gaz I don’t know WTF you’re doing on 12? Loving your journey buddy, long off the tee and colorful pants, what more could you want out of life hey?

Hey Pete … the “relaxed practice rounds” are just that. It gives me a good chance to stand behind each shot and really nut out the various options before playing it. Very nice work on the 12 FIR’s … don’t think I’ve ever hit that many of them (well not within just 1 round anyway). So are you “going for” your drives ….. or just focussing on putting them in play? The reason I ask is . when I go for mine, and they come off …. I then back off on my next shots …..... and tend to miss greens …. as opposed to what I probably should do ….. (the exact opposite), eg, steady drives and then attack the greens, where I can then use any “extra shot” I get on the hole in order to get up and down…....... just a thought. There is always plenty to work on though, oh, and yes I saw your Rossdale post …..... By the way ….... it’s also probably time for you to give Churchill a wide berth ….. as it’s starting to become psychological buddy, and you don’t need it!!

Hey Dave, I’m taking Francie’s advice on playing that hole at the moment. I did tee up a “practice driver” after putting my ball in play with the iron ….... and promptly sent it crashing into the trees …...... so it’s the old folks home for me on this hole (in comp play anyway) ......... bunt it up to the wide open spaces, then aim just left of the green with a short iron in hand and let the sloping lie bring it back. Sounds easy in theory doesn’t it? Bastard 5th hole ….... that I am going to love getting the best of …..... eventually.

Hey Stink, lovely to have you drop on by. I think in the past my game has been most deserving of a HC of 12 …. if not much higher. It hasn’t done me any real favours in the past in being something of a “golfing nomad”, as you really do need to get to know a particular course well, and work out all the options of how to play it. (Even then you can come unglued at times as you would know ….. but it certainly helps) The effects of chopping and changing courses all the time probably showed up most of all in my putting. I always thought that if I could just putt with some confidence, then I should be off single figures …... so now with a settled home, and with Victoria in the bag, that is the plan of attack …..... it’s all just starting to come good at the right time. Still got lots to work on though …........ but it’s all good and I don’t think my expectations are too far out of reach. I’m not hoping to go on tour (unless it’s with you) ........... just to hit some brilliant shots just a little more regularly, and whatever score I write down at the end of the day, so be it.

Hi Steve …........ Firstly, sorry I missed you last night, I was looking for you after my practice, but there was a bit of a crowd for the back 9 comp when I finished up. Perhaps you should get some Loudmouths buddy, so that I can pick you out from all the assembled beige!! Now your post above, and it has prompted some laughs …... along with some thought. I’m sure that the advancing years will take care of shortening any distance I get off the tee, without me having to worry about it too much. As for the 7th, if I don’t get the draw working properly (and it stays reasonably straight instead) is usually about 110 left (so still a wedge) ..... but last night’s drive was just a thing of beauty, although a bit risky, as it did flirt with the treeline a bit toward the end of it’s flight. Nothing wrong with hitting a 6 or 5 iron up the hill to that green though …...... which leads me nicely onto the following.

Playing just the front 9 in practice mode all the time (due to midweek comps playing on the back 9) ......... I realise that I never really hit a mid iron the whole way around (apart from possibly on the 2nd tee, and now for the 2nd shot on the 3rd hole where I’ll test out a 5 iron). For me it’s either Driver, 3 wood, 3 or 4 iron …..... and then a big gap before I start again with my 8, 9 through to my wedges. In comp though, there are a couple of times (on the back 9) when I may need to use the 5, 6, and 7 irons …...... yet I’m not hitting them from one week to the next …....... and I usually “miss” with them, in the weekly comp rounds. I think tonight’s plan (yes I’ll be out there again, weather permitting) will be to play everything off the tee (with the possible exception of the 3rd hole) ......... with my irons, in order to leave me with more distance into each green …. in order to practice with my 5, 6, and 7 irons. For example …...... I might try 3×5 irons in a row on the uphill 4th Par 5 hole. It’s probably high time also that my driver had a night off, as I’d hate to wear it out anytime soon ….. not to mention giving my much loved driver “tee” ......... a chance to catch it’s breath. I think from memory its now around 17 months, since I first hit a driver off the top of my nice big yellow placky tee. I’m not sure in fact, how I found this tee, or how it got into my bag …....... but it must have been hit a couple of thousand times by now, yet still it continues bravely onward. I’ve had a couple of close calls in nearly losing it (You do still have 5 minutes to search for a tee …...... before you have to call it “lost” and use a provisional, don’t you??) I’ve also had a playing partner who treatened to ransom it back to me, after he snaffled it off the tee one day…....... but the three of us (me, driver, tee) seem to have combined nicely to form a pretty handy team. I don’t know what I’d do without it, as I’ve never hit my driver off anything else for the last 19 months or so. I’ve also never seen it’s twin in any pro shop or golf shop, and I always look …....... just in case the unthinkable were to happen.

Yesterday all I focused on was 3 quarter swing. Definately with this club I MUST NOT/CAN’T swing hard at the ball. I was finding I was probably hitting it further and definately no “Gay fade”. (The fade comes in when I swing harder.) As for Churchill…....and to a lesser extent Rossdale, I’ve had my good rounds at both but just some times the shockers stick in the mind. Actually Churchill is in the best nick I’ve EVER seen it.

I played the 3rd 4th 10th and 14th with just a 5 iron to prove to Taylar that you dont need driver on a par 5. pared 3 of them and bogied the 10th should have used a sandy out of the bunker had to go out backwards with the 5.

P> Sounds like you were finding the sweet spot more often then Pete ….. which is always a good thing. I reckon the more consistently you hit the sweet spot …..... the more relaxed you become in the golf swing itself ….. (a chicken versus egg situation there). So how were the bunkers at Churchill? Have they lashed out and bought some sand for the bottom of them yet?

Yep it can be done in lots of ways …........ good lesson for the young fella there Steve. I hope he’s remembering all this good advice you’re giving him ….... when he’s out on tour …..... or picking out your retirement home for that matter!!

Boy howdy Gaz, you are a prolific one aren’t you! Not that that’s bad, it’s all good stuff. I’m totally with you on the chopping and changing courses. Also playing lot’s of unseen courses affects your confidence I reckon. To get the HC down, and build confidence in repeating shots, playing the same course a heap must assist. That’s why I want to join somewhere and try to play weekly in the comp, I know it makes sense. I played 3 new courses already this week, and another tomorrow. Played Ranfurlie and Eastern to 32 points, can’t do much better when you don’t know where you’re going most the time. You certainly can’t “play the hole backwards” in your mind either, so planning is tough. Loving your thread anyhow, cheers.

Only the ones that have that stylish “Francie curve” to them Muzz. Having watched Pete get around a course on more than a few ocassions, I’ve been witness to his ability to aim at one danger spot after another, and just curl the ball leftward ….... gracefully back to safety and into prime position time and again. If I could take anything from Francie’s game, and add it to my own, it would definitely be his ability to work the ball leftward with ease and consistency.
