Hey Gaz, hope you have a happy lefty time buddy, see you for golf soon.

What is this golf game you talk of?

Merry xmas to you to Stink, and to all my fellow ISG’ers.

Hope you all had a great day yesterday, and are all ready to hit the course once again.

Quick update from xmas eve’s Par round up at at Beacy.

Started fairly well on the front 9, managed to get an easy birdie on the bastard 5th hole …..... 5 iron, then pitching wedge to two feet, and a nice tap in birdie.

I also managed to get a few more going around, but you only get a + even if you go two better than your handicap ….... prick of a game par …....... whoever invented it should be shot.

Anyway, I finished the front 9 on +4 …...... but then managed to slip backwards slightly on the back 9 to finish with a final ….. +3.

It was slightly dissapointing to finish the back half in that way.I had a couple of three putts and stuffed up the odd hole with either lazy approaches, or chips, but it wasn’t all bad.

I need to play the back 9 more often I figure in order to suss out the greens a bit better and work on a couple of holes that I’ve let myself down on there of late.

Handicap has now dropped from 11.5 to 11.2 following on from the round, so I’m now officially off 11, and hopefully continueing that trend downwards.

Looks like another day of hitting a golf ball today, as the beloved is planning something of a “girls day” at our place ….....

Time to ring the course and try and book myself a spot.

Merry xmas Gaz, We played on Sat for a couple of 1’s, How does that saying go,,,,Hot Damn Hot!!
I recon we need Shadecloths over the T’s.

Are you playing Tomorro (Tue) ?

The boy stole my new Burner Driver and belted it to 148m out on the 10th, He turned 14 on 9/12/11

sheezuz, thats a 338m drive, that’s a heck of a wallop albeit on steep descent..I was pretty pleased with myself today leaving it 200m from home after smokin a nice drive

More tigerish than a wounded TIGER

I stand corrected:
On Thursday playing off the middle tee, he hit it to 149m out and left a 5iron (told him it wasn’t enough club) sitting on the fringe,
On Saturday he only hit it to 162 out, and put a 5wood half way up the bank at the back.

I hit driver, 5wood and 9iron.

on the 10th?, sheesh thats a monsterous hit

Okay time for an update, and it’s a round that came as a bit of a surprise.

Boxing day started overcast and half way around, decided to get really wet and windy.

1st Par 4 367m- Drive to left rough, 118 to go. Gap wedge to just short of the green but safe. A short big jessie chip put me on, and then two putts got me into the hole (5) ........ +1

2nd Par 3 playing 190 …..... 3 iron into the wind dropped just short of the front fringe. Putted it onto the green to 3 feet, and sank the par saving putt, phew (3) ....... +1

3rd Par 5 447m – Driver fade to left rough 230 to the green to go. A 3 iron just short, left a chip of some 15 metres down to the green. I chipped it just past the hole, and got the uphill birdie putt (4) ... back to … 0

4th Par 5 491m – Driver draw up and over the first hill to finish mid fairway. 230m to go once again this time using the 3 wood. Hit it nicely to the right rough some 20 metres short of the green. A nice SW chip on left me with another straight uphill 6 foot putt. Sank it for another birdie (4) .... -1

5th Par 4 dogleg 317m – 5 iron straight to the dogleg corner in perfect position leaving 118m to the rear left pin position. Hit a great PW to two feet, leaving a straight downhill putt …. sunk the third birdie putt in a row for (3) .......... -2 overall.

6th Par 3 129m – Hit a 9 iron off the deck trying to draw it back to the pin, and it drew too much, to finish just off on the right hand side, but slightly above the pin. I putted it back on and it rolled on down to ease its way a foot or so past the hole, tap in par followed(3) ........ -2.

7th Par 4 dogleg right 358m – A nice smooth driver to mid dogleg leaving 128 uphill to the pin. Hit another great iron shot, a 7 this time, that drew 10 feet and sailed up and on to stop 2 metres above the hole. A very slight left to right putt … I took my time picked the line, and then thankfully hit it pure (3) ......... -3.

8th Par 4 343m – Driver fade to left rough leaving 110m to go but slightly blocked by overhanging branches. Played a 3/4 swing with a 7 iron to keep it under the trees, and it landed and stayed on. Missed a lip out birdie putt, but sunk the awkward curling 2 footer for par, phew (4) ........ -3

9th Par 4 316m – Driver draw, drew a tad too much and finished in the right rough. It left me with 70 metres to go, but it also had me worried about the overhead trees. Decided to go with a 3/4 swing with a gap wedge ….... It landed on and close, but not close enough as I missed the tricky downhiller. Got a straight putt back up to the hole, and in for par (4) ............. -3

Halfway there and as I headed to the back nine, the drizzle started, and the wind also started to increase.

I knew by now that I was going great having sunk some birdie putts, but I never checked the score after 9, indeed I never checked it once …......... but, onto the 10th now.

10th 486m Par 5 – Hit a driver down the hill to the left rough, then I stood up on a 3 wood swing which saw the ball skinny on up the hill to finish 80 metres short. Hit an absolutely pure lob wedge up the steep hill to land on and within five feet. Those five feet though were across the slope and down from one higher level to the lower level. I studied that putt harder than I had studied at school, and then in the end picked a 3 inch break, just tapped it, and it thankfully curled intothe iddle of the hole, phew Birdie 4 …....... -4

11th Par 3 184m – Donned the wet weather gear before teeing off with a 3 iron into the wind as it was getting a bit “wet” by now. Finished up just on the front right fringe. A big jessie chip shot left me with 12 feet to go across the right to left sloping green. Missed the par saver, but made sure I got it close Bogey (4) .......... -3

12th Par 4 381m uphill – Yet again I pulled the driver to the right rough, but thankfully I was only trying to position it. A 3 iron draw around some branches got me up near the green but not on. A chip and then 2 putts for bogey (5) ............ -2

13th Par 3 156m uphill – 6 iron draw shot to front fringe. The wet grass caught my ball as I tried using the putter, then 2 actual putts and bogey (4) ........ -1

14th Par 5 450m dogleg left. Dravier straight to inside corner. Time to chip out with a 4 iron. Hit a thin tree and stoped dead, again chipped out, but this time I got it around the same thin tree and up to about 90 out. SW of perfection, up and on, and within 3 feet. Another tricky right to left putt for par . phew, made it (5) ....-1

15th Par 3 139m …....... 9 iron to front fringe, putted it onto the green and just missed, but it kept rolling . and then thankfully I sunk the nice 4 foot return putt for par (3) ........... -1

16th Par 4 332 m – Driver to centre fairway, leaving 113m to pin. Gap wedge up and on, but 10 feet short. Studied the subtle breaking putt but couldn’t pick any line. I hit the putt to the hole but it turned away and missed by 2 inches … never saw that one coming. Got the top in par putt (4) ......... -1

17th Par 4 349m Dogleg right – Driver draw shot of distinction to leave me with 106 to the pin from the centre fairway. Hit a smooth gap wedge and watched it sail righ ton target. It landed right in front of the pin and I waited for it to drop …..... it didn’t. Instead I had a 5 metre sidehill putt directly across the slope. I picked the line and then I went and hit it way too hard ….....and somehow also well inside where I was aiming. The ball struck the hole dead centre and thankfully dropped for birdie (3) ........ – 2

18th Par 4 310m – 3 wood to right treeline but safe. drawn 8 iron up and onto green, uphill cross green putt just missed, putted out for par (4) ............ -2

Summary of the round now …......

FIR = 7 out of 13
GIR 10 out of 18
Putts = 26

What I Iearned from my first ever sub-par round, was to try and play conservatively off the tee, and then to attack the pin with my 2nd shots, hitting the club that would get that pin distance (and not just get me on the front of the green).

This worked great for the front 9, and it was probably the least amount of mental work I have had to do during a round.

The back 9 though was much more of a struggle, as having not played that anywhere near as often, some of the greens nuances I am still a long way from working out, and a few of the approach shots need more working out.

One thing though that did help, was keeping in the moment. At the end of each hole I’d write down the score, the FIR, GIR, and putts and then just move on. Not once did I tally any of them up, and even after the round, after running into old mate Wasabipea …....... it wasn’t til I got home that I did the totals, surprising myself in the process.

Of course, now that I know that I can hit “sub par” ......... that challenge is always going to be before me, until the next time I get there, hopefuly in comp mode next time. It’s all well and good to do it in a practice round, but to do it in a comp round will be great.

Another challenge to look forward to ….......

Big up props. Or whatever the kids say these days.

(On a side note, played like a fool at times with Oz today, and still rolled in a 32pts on one of the toughest tracks this side of the bridge. It’s time I need to follow your suit and play smarter off the tee to take advantage of better iron play…)

Holy shooting low Batman! Savor this day, remember it, then go out and do it again! Bloody unreal mate, knew you had it in you.

What were you wearing?

Had an incogito yesterday Stink …....... non loudmouth shorts, nike shirt, and my nice almost new Fred Couples shoes, which despite all the rain, managed to stay firm underfoot ….. oh, and no white knee length socks, which I guess Wasabipea, makes my score ineligible.

Off for a comp round now (if they have enough people), so lets see how it goes, and thanks for the comments guys, much appreciated.

Well done GPJ, great round.

Outstanding round Gaz, I sense a couple of really low scores if the weather holds out.
I played Tue and recon the greens were only half as fast as they were on Saturday, left a few short.

As for your sub par, you forgot to deduct your hcp
-11 makes for an interesting score.
Par 71 – 13, = net 58.

Mate I can do that on the front nine.

You sure your playing the same Beaconhills course that I play on??

Thanks for the many well wishes guys .. was good to finally hit them as good as I know I can.

I figure that is the frustrating thing about this game …...... we know we can hit them well, but its the ongoing struggle that keeps us coming back.

No comp round today as they didn’t have the numbers, so it was practice on the hills back 9 and the Lakes 9 today.

Also, it was back to reality today, with the 3 wood being a bit wayward, and the odd draw shot becoming more of a hook. Plenty to work on though. The putting is still nice and solid though, but only tweo birdies to report today. A nice easy tap in on the 10th, after hitting driver, 3 wood, and a very short chip the last 5 metres onto the green ….......... and on one of the Lakes par 4’s.

No three putts to report, which again, is something I’m still not used to. Day off tomorrow now, to rest the legs, and the clubs.

Really looking forward to playing with my ISG cohorts once again early Friday.

Again guys, thanks for all the well wishes.

Even on the bad days, if your short game is solid, then you’re still a chance to score ….. like the rest of us, we’ve all just got to put that first one in play and the game becomes so much easier.
