Good attitude Weets, who cares about winning, we just gotta play the best we can all the time and it’s the HC that is a reflection of that. (Which looks pretty bad for me at the moment)

What is this golf game you talk of?

Just need to grease the wheels with some organic butter maybe?

Ha, yep, maybe a new spice in the game!

I keep saying it, but I’m close, it’ll come soon.

So I’m finally a member of the real comp club! Played my first ever comp round with a real handicap at Arundel Hills Country Club today. Quite a course to play it on – 72 ACR off the whites! Playing off 18.

Finished with a 17 over 89 for 37 points and a win in the comp by a single point. 45 on the back 9 which we played first and 44 off the front 9.

7 pars 7 bogies 2 doubles 2 triples

7/14 fairways 4/18 GIR 3/11 up and down 2×3 putts

2 sand 12 chips (although 2 were chunks out from a fence so not really a short game problem) 3 Texas and 33 putts

Lost shots were:
  • 2×3 putts
  • 8 not up and down
  • 2 from chips that I failed to get out of the rough properly and didn’t make the green
  • 1 from a thin chip through the green on 10 – my first hole
  • 2 shots from a sliced drive and then I hit a tree trying to chip out which ended up in the grass on a run down into a bunker and I topped the 7 iron out on the 13th (one of my triples!)
  • 2 shots on the 8th where after a great drive I pulled a simple 8 iron into deep grass just inside the fence line. Took 2 chunks to get it out part way to the green

In summary I am reasonably happy with that score at a course I’ve never played. And a challenging course at that. The swing is starting to click and if it hadn’t been for that pulled 8 iron on the 8th/17th hole I could have come home in 41. I really should have because it was a straightforward short iron from a perfect lie.

I actually lost another shot on the back nine from an 8 iron but this time because for some reason it didn’t stop when it hit the green (bent grass greens and everything else plugged all day, including the sand shot I hit after the 8!) Not sure what happened – was a very good strike but ran 15m through the green into sand. Finished up as a 145m 8 iron!

I hit some good chips today. What killed me was the gnarly rough around the greens – I didn’t commit to getting the club through it enough to hit the ball solid – at least 3 chips that barely or didn’t make it out. Otherwise my chipping was OK and I left a couple of up and downs out there with putting.

Not that my putting was bad. 33 is solid for me. The greens were tough to read. And some were strangely slower, so I left a couple of putts in the jaws.

Mostly the greens were very quick – just never seemed to want to stop running. But they rolled beautifully. But gee it was hard to see the line at times. I had ones that took 90 degree turns that looked pretty straight. Had one putt roll back down the hill a bit as well.

So overall I am happy with progress. Full swing is getting solid and short game is improving.

Bring on single figures!

Next comp is Coolangatta Tweed River course on Friday.

I only won by a single shot, so I think I got away with it! If I hadn’t had that triple on 17 and come in with 86 for 40 I’m sure I would have copped the call! :-)

Nice to see a ‘official’ score up Weety ;)
I’m guessing that one will get flagged.

Was flagged – only flagged round! Not sure how it all works for the first few rounds.

Golflink has the course at ACR 70 so it’s showing as played to 19 over. The card has it 72 white and 74 blue. Not sure what the deal is. But looks like I’m still 17.6.

Yep…you’re still 17.6.

It takes your best round for the first 6 rounds as your handicap.

As they are all played to 19, 19x.93=17.6

If you have a better round in the next 2 rounds, that “played to” (x 0.93) will be your new handicap.

Then it is your best 2 rounds after 7-8 cards, best 3 (9-10), best 4 (11-12), best 5 (13-14), best 6 (15-16), best 7 (17-18) and finally gets to your best 8 cards once you record your 19th round.

After 20 rounds, the initial 3 rounds will start to drop away…as will all of the rounds subsequent to that to form your last 20 rounds that your best 8 scores are taken to get your handicap.

Shot more than 36 points in an OOM day….seriously.
Smoldy. When only the best will do.

Was hoping for it to get to 15.8. Such is life.

Playing at Tweed on Friday – another course I’ve never played! We’ll see if I can knock a shot off this time!

Played at Coolangatta Tweed River course. Finished with a 91 for 35 points. Had 2 birdies which is something I am very pleased with. But other than that I played pretty average, especially the long game. Just too inconsistent.

Another plus was 32 official putts and I can only remember one Texas. So putting was good. The work is paying off there.

Need to get the full swing feel sorted though. Maybe a range session is on the cards over Easter as well?

Since I’m playing off 18 it’s not where I want it to be! I’m not shattered, but I’m impatient to get that consistency back that I had over Christmas with full swings. Just a bit frustrating.

But you are definitely right – it’s not shabby. It was OK.

Mate we played a lot of golf over the Christmas period too you just might need more game time.

Or as Tiger says ” More Reps”

And a couple more range sessions I suspect.

Hit the range today to work on something of Fos’ that I’d been neglecting.

Keeping the club face “pointing” at the ball in the takeaway. There’s a sense that the left arm rotates anti clockwise. I think in reality it just holds its position against the clockwise rotation tendency that it would have as the shoulders turn.

Have also weakened the grip a touch.

I was surprised how easy it felt. It is actually something similar to what I had been working on. And I was hitting the ball well. Not perfect yet – but I was surprised how well I was hitting it and how consistently. Generally a little push.

Might get another hit in between now and work on Tuesday. I’ll see how that goes.

Range tonight. The way I work on a new move is I start by just working on the specific action. So with the hand path changes I focus on the hands and what they are doing and moving them in the new way.

But after a while I need to move from training the action to building a way to swing the club that delivers the change consistently. Because I can’t go to the course and try and move my hands a certain way – I just won’t be able to do it consistently. It’s why I’ve swung from pars to double and even birdies to quads. It’s inconsistency due to the change in action.

So I am working on how best to swing the club so the hands don’t roll and I get the hand path on both the back swing and the downswing.

I mostly tried tonight swinging the hands. What I find though is that when I’m holding a club my brain doesn’t want to focus on the hands – it wants to focus on the club. So next time I’ll be working on a takeaway where I swing the club straight back off the ball, with the club head and the hands starting off moving together parallel. I think this will get the swing started on the right path.

We’ll see!

Hey Weety. I may be reshuffling my dates to go to Maryborough which means it wouldn’t clash with the isg nationals. I noticed Coolumn is halfway between you and Node. Maybe we could organise a ‘meet you halfway’ round together?
I may be able to smuggle Node in for the trip?
I haven’t asked Node yet ir organised date change but figured it maybe a idea?
I noticed there’s a few tracks in that area without dinosaurs on them that may let us in a Sunday comp? Just a idea ATM.
