What do you reckon 2P, do I need to grow a beard to get to single figures?

Hmmm … the missus hates facial hair … and getting to scratch isn’t worth getting none for 2 and a half years. Just have to do it with a smooth face!

Hit the range again today. Aiming to improve my feel for and execution of the back and forward swings of the club, and to get more feedback on my ball flight with different club, especially driver. And get a bit of chipping and sand practice.

Things for me to remember are to swing the whole club back, not just the club head, or else I lose the sense of the club to swing it forward. I tend to throw the club head and hit hooks when that happens. And keep that visual focus on the very back of the ball and not lose it as that seems to keep my whole swing working together to get the club swinging through the ball to the target.

Chipping was good.

Tested my ATV in the sand, and was able to use it well in the deeper sand opened up. And I can use it in tighter lies on the sand if I play it square or just a little open – the magic of ATV. But I’ll still tend to use the lob wedge for thin sand.

Ready for Gainsborough tomorrow – can’t wait.

Champion! The latest winner of the SEQ Golf Guys trophy is yours truly with a 39 point 85 at Gainsborough Greens! Woo Hoo! Happy to win but also very happy with a good score at a new track.

The challenge for the day was increased because my Sonocaddie had old maps so I was without it for much of the round – from the 4th to the 17th!

Finished out in 42 (7 over) and in in 43 (6 over). 6 pars 11 bogies and 1 double. 9 fairways. 8 GIR. 2/10 up and downs including 0/2 from sand. 38 putts included 2×1 and 4×3 putts. All the 3 putts were on the back nine and I finished with 3 in a row on 16, 17 and 18!

Played pretty solidly all day. Not spectacular at all, but solid. Very happy with it, especial,y following up my best ever round and in the heat of competition.

Won a closest to the pin as well, so done well! :-)

It was very solid game you put into mate. Great things are come g your way. Keep up the great work…

Just gotta remember the grip! Messes me up at some time every round when I get too weak and hit those push fades!

And keep working on the chipping, sand and putting.

And sort out my 30 to 50m shots.

Been thinking about my practice and decided that I need to put a lot more effort into the 50 to 80m range. 80-90m is my gap wedge full swing and I am happy to play full swings with it as I find it is pretty consistent. However sand and lob wedge full shots are definitely not very consistent as I am probably a 50:50 to hit the ball a little high on the face and come up 10-20m short.

Part of my plan is to work on my full swing with the wedges because I know a substantial part of the problem is throwing the club head at the ball instead of swinging the whole club through the ball, and the wedges show that technique breakdown better than the longer clubs.

But I need to get distances and confidence with each wedge and probably my 9 iron with a kiwi punch and also a full pitch shot. These will be key weapons once I build the skill as I can start laying up in the 50m range instead of the 100m range I currently choose because my full pitching wedge swing is my most reliable distance and accuracy shot.

Nice work Weeti …....... in looking at your scoring range.

Don’t discount the shorter 3/4 backswing shots though, as they can fix any “gap” you may have in your full swing approach shot distances, and can be pretty well on the mark once you get them grooved.

Heres how I worked mine out just by using 3/4 swings, (where my arms don’t go back above 9:00 on the dial in the backswing, or 3pm in your case)

I got to 100m out …... and dropped some balls. With a 9pm (3/4 swing) I worked out which club hit it that far ….... which for me was an 8 iron.

Moved up ten metres, grabbed my 9 iron ….. spot on for 90m

Another ten closer . hello PW … so 80 sorted.

Ten more steps in GW time …....... 70 sorted.

Another ten SW at 60

Last ten to 50 (I was running out of clubs) ........ LW.

Add back in your full swing clubs to those distances, and you have more than one option for many of those distances.

It just takes one practice swing with the club, just to focus on your arm position on the backswing …... and then you forget about it ........ and just hit the next one with the bal in the way.

By playing the 3/4 swing shots at times, it saves you from trying to hit the harder SW’s and LW’s flat out, particularly when you don’t have a perfect lie to hit from.

Just a thought for you to consider buddy.

Thanks GPJ. That ’s exactly what I was thinking of when I was talking about full pitch shots. I like to think of them as full pitch because it reminds me to take a narrow stance for these shots, which ensures that I take an easier swing. I find that if I take a full swing stance but aim for a 3/4 swing I can still get almost full swing speed with a shorter backswing. Whereas with the pitching stance it is more consistently a slower swing through the ball. Still a 3/4 arm swing, just less aggressive.

If that makes sense?

So definitely going for exactly what your talking about!

The other option – my kiwi pitch – is a swing with no wrist break, which limits how far I can swing back and through, with a standard stance and a fairly aggressive swing. Punchy lower ball with lots of spin when I play this with a wedge.

Actually, I should practice that with a pitching stance too to give me another number and option.

Thanks mate. Hopefully will get to the range tonight or tomorrow to give it a go.

Or both! :)

Go you good thing.

I’m up there in January, Weety….gonna come for a whack?

This is assuming the reigning “SEQ Golf Guys trophy” holder would lower himself to play with a mid-20s handicap, Mexican HACK!

Had a bucket and a half at the range tonight. Had the plan in mind to work on. I am also focussing at all times on swinging the club towards the target; really feeling and moving the club as a whole.

The habits I am trying to change are swinging the hands and arms instead of the club, getting overly focussed on my back swing, and hitting at the ball / throwing the club head.

The range was chockas tonight so I was up on the top tier. So not a good place to work on understanding my distances with different shorter swings! So the practice became about practicing those swings and not about learning distances. Which was actually probably a better idea, grooving the action before determining the distances.

Was good fun hitting kiwi punches with pitching, gap, sand and lob wedges. And to practice it with full swing setup and with pitching set up. You could see the distance differences. And then practicing full pitch swings with each of them as well. Good things to add to the kit bag once I work out the distances for each wedge.

Good full swing practice too. Just wedges and 7 iron tonight, and a couple of 4 hybrids that I really hit nice.

Things for me to remember are that a back swing with both hands swinging the club together will get the club in good position. I don’t need to get technical or focus on the back swing much. The problem with getting focussed on the back swing for me if that I often then lose focus on the important part of the swing – the bit that includes hitting the ball! :-)

The other thing to remember is definitely to SWING THAT CLUB TOWARDS THE TARGET! :-) Don’t lose the sense of the club, and swing it. Not swing my arms. Not throw the club head at the ball. Swing the club towards the target through the ball.

Was hitting it very solid again tonight. The variation was very good. Many a bit right. A few a bit too right! Quite a few that were within a few metres either way. And a few that finished left, but only a couple. So things look like they are continuing in the right direction.

If you’re hitting it well, get used to where it’s going… Sage advice I received about 30 years ago from de la Torre. The thing about continuously correcting is that after a while corrections pile onto corrections.

At one point during the lesson Manuel said simply, “Hit a ball over there,” and pointed off in a direction. Easy—no target. Then he said, “Hit one over there,” in a different direction. I did—no problem. He said “What do you want to know?” After explaining that I wanted to hit it at the target he said, “Well, you can hit it over there and over there, so why can’t you hit it over there where the target is?”

My interpretation became that since I looked at the ball during the swing I didn’t know if I was exactly aimed at the target, so once set up I had to trust my alignment and consequently trust my swing. When on flat ground, your alignment should determine where the ball goes, and your swing should determine how it gets there.

Hey guys

Can I tag along if your playing during the week somewhere? Also can look at getting some better rates possibly for us at some of the courses.

Are you playing Brissy or GC?

Maybe set up a SEQ weekday round for anyone that can make it?
