Hypothetical for the Cashmores...

If you were given Augusta National to do what you want with it, what would you do? Only parameter for this hypothetical is that you are making changes to Augusta with only the Masters in mind (which really should go without saying anyway).

This forum does not exist any more, it’s an illusion. The regular and insightlful involvement has been pulled.

Interesting question. Why not open it up to all to comment? What indeed would we all do given this opportunity. For mine I would reduce the length of the course but tighten up driving areas. I would also firm up the greens as they were extremely soft and forgiving to long iron approaches. Anybody else???

Go back pre – tiger years and see where they(long hitters) are hitting it and tighten it up.Ball strikers and movers (Corey Pavin and his ilk) don’t have a show.Tiger proof a course and only Tiger can play it.OR have a comp ball that only goes so far or does so much like tennis does so the shorter hitters can belt it and get somewhere near the longer hitters unless they get out of there comfort zone and try to belt the bejeezus out of it.Let them all hit B52’s,Ultras or Hot dots and see them stop them or back them up on greens running 12 on the stimpmeter
You don't hit anything on your back swing so why rush
it!!!! |

I would remove all of the rough (or is that the 1st cut???) and the pines that have been added to holes like 11 and 18 to return to the wide open driving areas. The course needs to be firmed up as well, both fairways and greens and perhaps some, not all, of the added length can be scaled back. Ideally, Hootie Johnson should be made to do all of this restoration work by hand!!! This will return the course to the way it was intended to be played and Dr Mackenzie and Bobby Jones might rest in peace!

What “leftypullrightsaid”. One ball for all. Get it out of a bucket at the 1st Tee.

Either Mr Cashmore has nothing, or he is too busy destroying another course. No wonder he is ridiculed endlessly.

Fyiripu…i mean sms316 How would you know anything about Cashmores work being from Canberra?

If you read a lot of the historic documents from Jones & Roberts, you’ll see that the original concept was to keep pace with a growing game, being prepared to update the course to meet tournament needs. This included lengthening & changing the course as required. Although there is a lot that I don’t agree with at Augusta National, you will find Hootie was closer to the mark than you think.

Hi, Tony’s brother Ray here. Tony is supervising construction of an 18 hole members’ course in Beijing (about 60% complete), amongst other work in Asia. Augusta has become too much like a US Open course – very long, tight and tricky. What is wrong with setting up a course so that the good golfers can display their true wares? The best golfer will still win, the crowds will continue to get great enjoyment from a beautiful golf course and the stories will continue to be told well after the event. I cannot fathom why courses have to be set up so ridiculously.
