Hello all - this is my first post here so please go easy on me.
Tony / James - I have been a long time fan of the Commonwealth course in Melbourne, although it has been several years since I had the pleasure of a game there. I note from reading this forum that your company has done some work there in the past few years. I was hoping you could provide an update of what work is in progress down there now and what other modificationsor improvements may be on the cards for the future. Also, I understand there are new couch fairways down there - how do they look and play? Much appreciated, Freddy.

Looks crap and plays the same.

Thanks Freddy; great to have you on board. Commonwealth is not one we can really talk about right now. The Club is in the process of selecting a golf architect for all ongoing works and from their correspondance to me this morning, it will not be us. While deeply disappointing for our firm, the chosen architect will no doubt do a fine job there and could better brief you on what he and the Club might have in mind. PM me and I'll shoot you his details. James

All they need is a friggin Lumberjack !

James, I appreciate you may not be able to go into any details, but it seems odd that your tenure there has been so short. Wasn't the club happy with the work that Tony did? Didn't it work out as everyone expected? And who got the job - is a secret that you cannot divulge? Regards freddy

Does it matter G69 hit the nail on the head. It can't be that hard. Although - How does it work. Does a course/club have a designer on a retainer for periodic reviews or are they only engaged for specific/master works and then moved on. Or are designers sought for a specific style that a course/club wishes to introduce?
BTW - Freddy. Nice avatar

Hows Mike Clayton doing these days?
|
|
cutting down trees won't make the 1st any good nor will it fix some of those traps. I'm still perplexed by that mystery bunker between the 2nd and 17th greens! appreciate that the 1st wasn't Cashy - but it needs fixing in the long term.
|
|
Ben, I dont understand what you are saying?? Did Clayton get the job? Or are you suggesting that he wouldn't do a decent job?
|
|
James, that is a shame. That bunker you built about 300 metres down the left hand of 6 gets me every time.

Hi Freddy I hope you understand that it's not my place to announce a decision made by the Club on a public forum. There are protocols in place; no doubt the information will flow through in the next few days. I think the Club needed to see what was a right for them and made the decision accordingly. We enjoyed working there very much and would have liked it to continue but we also appreciate that the evolution of a Club may use several designers before they find one that will suit their overall vision. On this occasion that wasn't us. Pretty simple really. Thanks for your interest though Freddy; hope you find some valuable information within this forum as there as some terrific posters here.
Cheers Alphonse; very productive comments there - you truly personify the spirit of the game in every post you write. Keep it up!

Thank you for those kind words James. Someone has to fight the good fight.

Fredd,
Sorry, I should have been more direct as I wasn't 100% sure
on the info I had about the decision. But now that I am I should
have written something like this "I am sure that Clayton
will do more than a decent job."

good to see a sandbelt course move the right direction, perhaps the 36 holer down the road might take note - but unfortunately I doubt it
|
|
James, Thank you for letting us all know what the situation is at Commonwealth. I hope that Tony is taking the decision well. I will keep my ear to the ground and await more formal news of what is proposed at one of my favourite courses. Best, Freddy.

With Clayton in at Commonwealth, now might be an opportune time to stack up on cheap firewood and, possibly, plaques... Freddy, welcome to ISG. You may not know it but you have stepped into a hot bed of discussion with your first posts. There are a lot of posters on ISG who are less than happy with the work done by Cashmore and Co at Commonwealth and have let them know as much in no uncertain terms. Ironically, these same people (who are mostly banned from this forum) are supporters of Claytons ideas. It will be interesting to see what exactly Clayt's can do that Cashy couldn't and see if these same people support the work done in the future. I like you haven't played Commonwealth that much but do love the course, hopefully your input here can be constructive and open minded as there has been some closed minded crap from both the Cashmores and their supporters and those who are on the opposite side of the fence spewed forth in this forum in the past. lets hope EVERYONE can be honest and put forward intelligent debate from here on in.

My hunch is freddy is a rebranded local, also coming across nicer.

Don't tell me whatever Judge has is contagious. Some of us nice posters will have to turn bad to restore the balance.

Interesting that Jack has not posted on this topic. Anything to add, Jack.
