My golf was a Flop! But the weekend itself was great fun. Anyone that misses this is Crazy IMO.

I’m not in any way keen on the travelling distance to Hidden Valley from my place, but you might get on Sat arvo for a smaller group, the main event on Sunday, and Monday shouldn’t be a problem. The course is quite good, the venue can provide us with a good dining / function area and it is handy enough to Tullarmarine for the interstate travellers.
I’m unaware of what accommodation is available in that region.

From me.
Quite simply, if I was travelling interstate (and I’m not) I’d have to factor in a few things.
Flight cost – not really Accommodation – yeah a bit Family approval – fair bit Work approval – needs planning. Course cost – could not give a shit.
Now I know no one wants to spend $150 on a flight, $200 on 2 nights accom, $120 on food.
But if you’re going to do that, why drive 3 hours and play a $30 course. Just book Moonah !
It’s going to add up no matter what. Do you really think an interstate traveller cares about the extra $50 to play golf on a golf course?
My advice. Don’t treat the national day like a get together (that will happen naturally) or it will fall apart real quick.
Book courses people want / desire to play. And if that’s a Tuesday / Wednesday then so be it,

Think GPJ has a good point and maybe this is where we need to start then work backwards to decide venue etc
what does the event look like.
option 1 2 or 3 days of intense stableford competition on best courses in the state under strict tournament conditions. basically an ISG national championship
option 2 or 1 day fun ambrose 1 day of stfd comp bbq dinner drinks(does this stfd go into GL) (y/n) .
Option 1 course selection becomes major factor in selection because people want that.
Option 2 doesnt really matter the venue so much as social event.

Well said sir. Agree with pretty much all of this.
If the courses are of the highest quality, I’ll pay well – within reason.
I don’t have an important job by any means which alleviates the “time off work” issue. But I do have small children and a wife who I have to convince.
I’ll say this. There is no way I’m travelling all the way from Brisbane to Melbourne and then only attending 2 days if 3 days are happening.
I’ll express my interest in the trip, and most certainly The National round.
I still think a hired bus or two would be your cheapest best friend for the weekend.
Cheers

For my 2 cents worth …….. There seems to be two issues at play here. One is the desire by the organisers to have a Saturday game for some reason …….. which appears to have them now casting far and wide for a course willing to accept a large group. I’d suggest that courses on the Murray might well be available for the Saturday for such a large group …… but shifting the games from Melbourne and thereby ensuring for example, the 50 players who played at Curlewis a four hour drive ……...... would surely see numbers plummet I believe (including me). Then as Pom has already pointed out, it just adds extra difficulty to those travelling from interstate in trying to fly into some cow paddock of an aerodrome, and then trying to catch a lift in the back of some farmer’s ute to the local hotel. As a Melbourneite, and with the best courses in the state all located within easy driving distances ….. I’d like to see the Victorian event played in Victoria …….... and not up in NSW preferably. That being the case ….. the other possible scenario … is of course a Sunday / Monday event in Melbourne. Courses would suddenly be available for the Monday, which then just leaves Sunday to try and organise …. something that our Vic ISG Committee do very well I believe That option would be the surest one to sort out in terms of getting bums on seats. I realise the implications of a day or two’s loss of income for some……..... but I’d happily take a Monday off work, and do it much sooner than I would go for a four hour drive up to the outback. Another point to consider . hold a small game on the Saturday . the main event on the Sunday .. and then another smaller event on the Monday. People can then choose to play Sat / Sun and then fly home, or go to work on the Monday …. others could to Sun / Monday double if they wished. Anyway ……... I think the organisers need to consider the issue purely from a “bums on seats” basis. The whole point of this National Event is to get as many people invloved as possible isn’t it …... so whichever scenario the organisers think will realistically get say 60 to 70 people to participate in … go with that one. Deano …..
I do apologise if my comments eg “fly into some cow paddock of an aerodrome, and then trying to catch a lift in the back of some farmer’s ute to the local hotel” caused offense …..... it wasn’t my intent to denigrate you’re fine part of the country …..... just inject a spot of humour into my post. (I assume having re-read it …... that is the part that you found offensive)
Indeed, I have enjoyed my time up in your area, in fact I got my initial handicap, via cards accumulated during an extended visit to the Howlong Country Club, and on another visit up to the border area, I managed to snag some prizes at the Annual Trainer and Jockeys Charity Golf Day event at Thurgoona.
My points in favour of Melbourne as host , as opposed to the Murray Area, (of which you are rightly proud), are based purely on “bums on seats”.
Either last year or the year before … a contributor on here from somewhere up your way I believe, tried to organise a weekend’s golf at his local club (MicklesonsMob from memory), where he was the club’s president so he could get green fee deals, as well as get great accomodation deals via the course’s attached motel.
One by one however, the dominoes started to fall over as one by one, guys slowly pulled out of the proposed event ….... no doubt, due to the “tyranny of distance” .. and I believe the proposed event was cancelled in the end. (I can’t recall reading any feedback on it)
That being the case ….... I don’t think we’d neccesarily like that to occur with the National event. To my way of thinking, it should be planned with the priority being to have as many people as possible attend.
Again Deano …....... sorry if my comments above caused offence …. it certainly wasn’t my intent.

Why won’t you Mexicans travel?
We have players that regularly drive 2.5hrs each way to our games here, surely to a National event, in your own state, you’d make some sort of effort?
Guess it answers the question as to why so few of you made the trip to the GC.
Now, who’s gunna put out the red carpet and have me stay at their place? Not too far from the course(s) I hope :P

My 2 cents worth, You will get more people coming if it is held in Melbourne. The wives and children are the people to consider. Try telling any wife you are dragging her to victoria to the middle of no where and nothing to do so you can play golf and see what their response is.
On the other hand you say I have booked a trip to Melbourne for her to go shopping, I would highly doubt you would get any objections.
Here’s my suggestions if we had any brains we would organise a shopping trip for the wives to chadstone shopping centre. There is a special free tour bus for this that goes to chadstone. If we did this is would be a great selling point for wives abroad to want to travel to Melbourne so we get bums on seats and playing in the National event.
If people want to play in Melbourne I could organise to play Long Island either Sunday or Monday and also have a dinner there. It wouldn’t be mega expensive either. It’s a sandbelt course and is known as having the best greens in Victoria.
Give me some feedback on some other courses you want to may be play I can make a few phone calls. My suggestions is be a Monday for this course. This is how it rolls guys if you want to play a top notch course be prepared to pay for it.
Here is my question to every HOW much are you prepared to pay, is $200 to $300 for 2 days golf fair? if I could just say get you on Kingston Health and say LongIsland is $300 a fair deal ?

You bet I’d play Long Island and KH for $300
I had to pull out of a golf day at KH 3 years ago and I’m still spewing.

“pffftt, mate i have no problem with it being in melbourne and happy to drive 4 hours plus and i agree with it being held down there“
I agree it should be in God damn Melbourne, can’t you read ? shit i wouldn’t dream of having it outside the street light system, it’s dark up here you know.
I’m not for one second suggesting having the thing up on the Murray, doesn’t make sense logistically.
i took offense most likely cause we have to deal with Melbournians every summer up here, they seem to be able to go beyond the city limits ok, they drag those gas guzzling, river bank destroying malibu’s up here and abuse anyone in their way, f’n idiots are mostly from melbourne. that smart arse attitude you took was typical and certainly not appreciated.

Here’s the way I look at it.
I’m playing Hope Island this Sunday, its a beautiful course and just down the highway from my house about 45 mins away. And I’m paying $100 to play. But I can play there fairly well any time due to where it is.
If I made the effort to travel to Melbourne, you bet your bippy I’d pay $2-300 to play Kingston Heath and Long Island. I would rarely get the opportunity to play these courses as I don’t visit Melbourne often. That’s the calibre of courses that would provide extreme encouragement to make the trip in the first place.
Cheers
