Did you know there’s a club for left handed golfers? NALG Qld play at several metro & country clubs throughout the year – mostly on a Sunday. Right handed partners are also welcome at all but championship games.

They called it golf because all the other good four letter words were taken.

i know Mr C -Sydneysider
myself -ACT
and Leftypullright

r all right brain dominant in Golf

If Tiger plays Lefty will he be that good ?
Square is Good ? Sure is, if it's the right stick !
Good Golf is Fun plus the Great Outdoors...
In the Bag: Clubs and Balls. My Handicap is Bad Golf.

Not all left handed golfers are lefties in other parts of their life so can’t answer that. I also know golfers who are lefties in everything except golf so go figure the left/right brain thing.
Could be interesting to find out though.

so how do you join this club lady lefty, as Im left handed and live in Qld

keen to hear some more details myself

Leaving 10m putts on the lip, such is life. Bring on Q-School.

Another Queensland lefty here!

I’m secretary of the FNQ division of the NALGA we meet once a month on a Sunday at a course in the area.
The Associaton has branches in most states and a national championship is held usually in October, this year in Tasmania http://nalgatas.org.au

There is also an annual international championship this year held in NZ as i type. http://www.walg.org/

Any FNQ lefties out there i’d love to hear from you.

I have two children, a daughter and son. We are all left-hand dominant in nearly everything we do, from writing to kicking a football to batting in cricket. Except golf. My son plays golf left-handed, my daughter and I play right-handed.

I’ve been trying to work out why this is so. The fact that we are so dominantly left-handed, but two of us play right-handed, brings into question any significant left-right brain thing. I think it may be more to do with a preference for swinging to one side in the backswing … it could be an issue of balance and arms rather than handedness.

I just feel really awkward trying to hit left-handed, especially trying to take away and rotate in the backswing. (It might partly be because as a high-school student I played hockey, and you can’t play it left-handed, so I’ve just continued the swing.)

P.S. There are a number of left-handed players at my club and nearly all are right-handed in everyday life. But the most awkward golfer is the one who plays right-handed with a left-hand low grip!

P.P.S. My wife is also left-handed, so it’s definitely genetic. :)

One of the blokes in my cricket team (bats lefty, bowls righty) also plays golf left handed with the exception that his driver he hits right handed… go figure that one out!

1-L, it is all there my friend.

Your batting in cricket left and golf right is a new one on me Publish.
I’m a right handed person who bats, cricket and baseball and plays golf left and most lefties i play with are similar.

For me if i want to swing right handed it’s the left arm that doesn’t want to co-operate, i can hit balls quite well one handed with a RH club in my right hand.

Like you i know a bloke who swings RH with a LH grip.

We sure are a weird breed we golfers.

My left arm feels like it wants to control the swing, my right arm feels like it just wants to go along for the ride. This is probably why I feel more comfortable swinging right-handed, because for me it’s effectively hitting a left-handed “backhand”.

It gets me into trouble with trying to keep a flat left wrist, because in order to do that properly and to build power, you need a certain amount of usefulness in the right hand/arm, to push down and through as the right arm unfolds and straightens. The left arm should just be one long, relatively straight pivot around the left shoulder.

I probably need to practice swinging a one-handed “forehand” using only my right arm in order to strengthen it.

Interesting you mention the backhand, though i’m no Federer if there’s a shot i play well it’s a top spin backhand, righthanded of course and i feel pretty much the same with my swing as you describe only it’s the left which is the passenger.

Work is for people who don’t know how to play GOLF.

I am in the same boat. Right hand dominant in everything except batting in cricket and golf. I can hit a ball to some degree swinging a right handed club with just my right hand, but no joy when my left hand joins the party. just feels awkward and wrong.

The trouble is that I often try to steer the shot using my right hand and go from slicing to snap hooking. Have tried a drill teeing a ball on high tee using a 8 iron hit with only the left hand on the club.

PGriff, yeah know it well, was told by a pro once that i had to quieten down my right arm as it was too dominant.

During another lesson, a pro, a different one explained to me the old skipping the stone on the water and it’s likeness to the golf swing, there is no way i could skip a stone with any degree of control with my left arm.

No wonder i’m destined to be a high handicapper.

Just come back from WALG in Queenstown in New Zealand and have booked for NALG in Hobart in October.

Played with many different people from around the world with being left handed , having a laugh and enjoying a drink ranking in no specific order .

Yep , some took it VERY serious but not anyone I met and didnt see any “club chuckers” :)

Do everything left handed and footed but picked up and used a right handed 6 iron the other day and hit it with a draw !

Good stuff holty, hope to get to one of the National or International comps one day, great to hear the social side is alive and well.

How did you go?

Hey Lady my email is massticater@hotmail.com thanx
Glen

Are there any other lefties like me that get a sick satisfaction out of being the minority? I couldn’t play in a foursome with 3 other lefties, it just wouldn’t be natural!

Ladylefty, is there one in Victoria – both my wife & I are lefties – she naturally & I’m right handed except for anything I do with 2 hands – batted LH in cricket & baseball play LH golf, played RH squash etc. My father was the same as well but took it to the next level – he boxed LH as wel!!!!!

Golf balls are like eggs - they're white, sold by the dozen & you need to buy fresh ones every week!

My records say the Sec is Trevor Golding of Glen Waverley. Ph 03 9802 1580 email Trevorgee@aol.com
Not sure how current that is.
