Yes, I'm a victim of a $$cam that has been carried out on a well known auction site.

Without going into the specifics of the $$cam, due to current investigations all I can say is click on here:

Computer Program

Click on the seller ID

15 people $$cammed for a total of $ 3080-00

This is how I feel mad.gif mad.gif mad.gif mad.gif mad.gif

A quick read of the buyer protection policy on ebay shows that they will reimburse you for the price, less $25 for processing. Looks like a lengthy process though.

Fish Head,

you are right on both counts.

Hi amanda_wong.

Extremely unlikely in our case.

It's a long story that I would love to tell you about, but at this point in time I just have to give the relevant authorities every chance to carry out their investigation.

It seems to me that the system is open to abuse. Loopholes everywhere.

Very interesting isn't it mau wink.gif

Don't get me wrong, I don't mean to promote that other site, but if you look at that sites chatboards, your eyes will certainly be opened by what goes on. ohmy.gif

I have found out the hard way wink.gif

There is always someone out there who wants to stuff things up for the vast majority.

I had my eBay username and password stolen last week and some dude listed about 20 Dell computers and 20 Canon cameras with my identity. The scam was that somebody would "purchase" them and send the $$ to a fake eBay seller adn lose their money. Fortunately eBay were on to it and suspended me while they investigated me and finally restored me.
They told me that we should NEVER EVER respond to any eBay emails except those that are about an item we are selling or buying. For instance I was sent a fake email yesterday about an item I was watching. It told me that there was only 2 hours until the auction ended which was true. But it wanted me to "click" to bid. If I had clicked I would be on a fake eBay site and on the way to being defrauded. BEWARE.

Their system has more holes in it than swiss cheese. They are clearly a target for unscrupulous operators.

Maybe it's time for the ACCC and Federal Government bodies to be informed of the problems.

Jeez, thats amazing, I get those emails all the time. I got one the other day saying that someone had been accessing my account, and making fraudulent bids. They said my account would be suspended in 72 hrs if i didn't update my account details. It had a clicky button in it so that I could change them. I clicked the button, but my computer saved my ass, it must have recognised something was up, cos it wouldn't open. Lucky, but a lesson learnt.

If you ever get an email from someone claiming to be from ebay and requesting your login and password details then report it to spoof@ebay.com.au . It will be a scam for sure.

Yeah, I'll do that Jack, thanks

The easiest way to tell: if you click the link and you're not taken to "ebay.com" then you're being scammed.

Me? I copy the link to my clipboard and paste it somewhere just to see how bad some of the URLs can be. It's quite amusing how some will try to make their URL look like ebay (i.e. "ebay.account-access.com") and how others couldn't care less (i.e. "12.34.567.89/steal/peoples/ebay/id.html"). How anyone is fooled by this I'll never know.

No its not. The fake ebay pages still have ebay in the url. Its impossible to tell. Why click on a link at all?

The only way you can be sure you are on the real eBay is to go to www.ebay.com.au (ie. type it in or use favourites). Any other way - eg clicking on a link is possibly a fake.

If unsure send the email or page to spoof@ebay.com.au. They will tell you within 2 mins whether it is OK.

These two were from The Age today - its not as if people breaking the law are allowed to get away with it simply because they do it on ebay.

Folks be warned about

THAT

auction site.

The item I tried to purchase a couple of weeks ago, has appeared again under a new different seller ID.

I asked the new seller 2 simple questions through

that

sites email system.

1. Where did you aquire the item from ?

2. Why are you selling it ?

Answer

Item is brand new, contact me directly on my email address _________ .

____________________________________________________________________

If I was to contact that seller directly myself, I would be exposing my email address.

Always ask the questions through

that

sites email system, just to protect yourself.

Better still, don't deal with them wink.gif

DG, there is a reason ebay provides feedback history, so you can establish the persons history of being a good person and QUESTION why are they selling computer programs when all they have EVER sold is beads.

Yes, let the buyer beware but when purchasing, you are looking for consistency, if you don't use the tools you are provided by ebay, you are increasing your risk.

If you have concerns, report the person to ebay, they will move on, maybe start again with someone elses user id.

I understand there are shonky guys on ebay, thankfully not too many in golf equipment, but coming in here and slagging off the site when there are a good number of sellers and buyers WHO POST HERE

with integrity

, is poor form.

PS, I'm about to list some TaylorMade gear, some of it $500 under retail, want some laugh.gif laugh.gif laugh.gif
