throwing in your job

this is probably a little to personal, but I’m planning on giving my notice after being in the same job for 16 years.I’ve been there since the beginning, before the current owner, before the engineers and before all the lazy ass wanna bes that seem to get somewhere by sucking up the bosses ass.I’ve put up with everthing, but now I’m expected to lower my own standards of quality to satisfy the latest blowin that has 100% backing by the lastest owner.
Just wondering if anyone has any opinions, good or bad. Cause at the moment I feel guttered.

My wife says I'm obsessive compulsive. I say cant be that bad, there's
about 800 of us where I go every Saturday...

Mate, I feel you!
Having been a Firie for 40 years come January I have no idea of the world of private businesses and the dog eat dog that goes on – I do know that being up front and having honest dialogue with your problem person/s may solve your feelings – if it turns negative and you feel strongly about not lowering your standards then move on – I’m sure you’ll step up a rung in your new job whatever it may be.. goodluck!

Political Correctness is doctrine fostered by a delusional minority and by the media, which holds forth the proposition it is entirely possible to pick up a turd by the clean end.

Thanks Ditty,I think part of the problem is I’ve been there to long and expect the place to run the way I think it should.
I’m the fabrication manager there in the steel area and even ran the whole factory at one stage but threw that in because I had no support from the upper management. Of course it didn’t take long for the guys on the floor to realise that and I had no control over what they were doing

Glenbbo, I’m out on a years break shortly due to some of the same frustrations I hear coming through your post. Is there any prospect of being able to take 1-2 months break and clear your head?

Guess at some stage everyone feels similar, very few actually end up acting on it. We spend a large part of our life at work, if you are unable to make a substantive change to the work environment and its effecting life outside then you probably need to make a change.

All said with the usual disclaimer, you make some warranties to the family about how life is, based on keeping the money coming through the door each week.

Good luck

Glenbo, I just recently threw in my job for similar reasons. I was there doing a good job – customers loved me, but unfortunately I didnt suck up the bosses ass as much as one of the other guys. He got the promotion and relied on me alot to help him, which didnt sit right with me.
I had a few words to say to the boss and things didn’t go my way, so I moved on.
I am alot happier now for doing it.
The job I am in now is not paying quite as much, but the job is better and I am happier and healthier and I think that is what is most important.

Maybe after all that time there a change might be as good as a holiday, but only you can know that for sure

Good Luck

Sounds a lot like my current situation, not sucking up has taken me from being on 30+ hours a week to 15 or less, but becoming the guy that gets used and abused with the on-call status. There’s always been a sense of favouritism where I work, the guy that does the roster is an older guy who is very much into the younger women, they give him a smile, they get everything they want.

I can’t even call in sick on a Tuesday without getting the condescending tone, and if they call me up asking me to work and I knock it back, I can expect to not even appear on the new roster. I’ve got an appointment with the CEO tomorrow, it’s either I get more hours and responsibility or I walk, simple.

My kids are 14 and 12 and they have been telling me I should get another job for years .They hardly ever saw me a few years ago and they know how my job gets to me. I’ve said it a hundred times before: THATS IT I”M LEAVING and it doesn’t happen, but I know this time it will,an 8 week break at xmas and I’m gone. My head welder (Who has been like a set of second hands for the last 7 years) said he’s coming with me. My wife is a rock, how she has put up with all my moods over the years because of my job,I have no Idea.

I know what you mean.I’m lucky if I have 3 days off sick a year ,yet I get treated as if I have cheated them. Strange that, after all these years they owe me about 5 weeks of acumulated sick leave and 11 weeks of annual leave.

what do you do glennbo?

By the sounds of it, instead of looking for a new job you should start your own business. Less security initially but long term greater satisfaction and you’ll know the standards will be high cos you’ll be the one setting them!

Glennbo

I’m not sure if you live in a big city or not, but if you do , and your welder is doing the harold holt with you then i think you’ll be fine.

do your homework and get the word around to as many potential empolyers as you can that you are both interested in jumping ship. Your solidarity should indicate to new employees that you have a value.

Bottom line is that your mental health is more important than anything else.

you read my mind.I’ve been thinking of that for quite a while.
I’m a sheetmetal worker by trade but have work in steel fabrication for a long time, building and designing hospital beds and nursing home furniture. Also have a lot of experiance in timber but thats now more of a hobby than job

I hope nobody thinks this is me trying to find a new job. I’m having a few beers and just want to talk about it without stressing my wife, although I think she is really happy about it.

Mate, I’ve found this about the forum with a few people here that they are genuine and care…. Give advice but all is “IMHO”.. All’s good!

This forum is a great place to talk thinks through…although I don’t like the engineer bashing…I am an engineer at a company that does a lot of steel fabrication so may be hitting a bit close to home :)

Seriously…good luck either way mate!

down and out…did ya get that?

Sometimes it is just nice to sound off a little & get some feedback from people you talk to from time to time . No stress , no pressure. I think most of the older members probably have a fair idea where you are coming from.In my trade ( Glass ) THere is a fair bit of heavy lifting involved. I would love to get out & do something a little easier But what do you do after working in the same trade for 30 years. Before that I drove a furniture truck, & that is definately out. I wish you good fortune in your future working life. ( Wherever it might be)”-)

Go west young man…..seriously you will be so much happier for the change wherever you start a new job, but definitely consider a move west, the money and lifestyle is excellent and the golf and people are top notch.

Good luck whichever way you go mate.

Incidentley where do you live now?

Toolish ,No problem mate. I know some engineers that left because they are obviously smart enough to get out of that place and I do miss them, they are top blokes. But some are young overpaid wanks

mate, its a scary proposition to set up on your own especially with kids and a mortgage etc.

If you have been there long enough and can take just one customer who will keep you in enough work to pay your mortgage to begin with then go for it.
