Where to live in the Wollongong area

Hey all, well my plans have changed again for work. I am getting transferred to Wollongong. Not an area I know too well. Looking to get a newer house, around $450,000. Any areas you recommend to live or avoid??

Small kids, so schools are important, and within 30 mins drive of the gong.

Thinking Albion Park maybe??

thanks for any tips

Help me avoid the bogans!!!!!!!!

avoiding bogans in Woolongong is like trying not to get wet while surfing….. not going to happen

Hi truesalt
I lived in the illawarra for 27 years from Fairymeadow in the north to Albion park rail in the South.

Albion Park is your best bet if you want a new value for money house with minimal bogans.

Avoid Dapto Port kembla Unnanderra cringilla warrilla and berkely.

That said i would buy an older Termite protected house in the northern suburbs if it was me.

On the subject of bogans i never saw a real one till i moved to western Sydney.

You will love the illawarra.

Good luck

True salt – it may be a better move to come up here to Queensland where the sun shines out of everyone’s arse….. :-))

No Bogans north of Brisbane CBD until you hit Gympie…. :-))

Yeh…..... and….......so whats ya point??!
Took you a few days. Worth the wait though!
mmmm…....... I’ll get back to you!!!

Flinders has schools, ocean views and plenty of courses nearby. Curious to know what sort of work are you doing as I’m moving to the Illawarra next year.

As for bogans…..........they’re everywhere it’s just some are more bogan than others.

Northern suburbs are the go for bogan avoidance. Then again, there is an enclave or two around Bellambi and the Circle in Woonona. $450k should get you into Pioneer Beach estate (nicely groomed suburb built on a reclaimed seaside swamp) in a single level place or something a bit bigger and newer in Edgewood (nicely built suburb on a former coal mine site).

I live in Woonona Heights. Older neighbourhood, mostly 1960’s with some newer redevelopment going on. You won’t get much up here for $450k as most of the blocks are 1200m^2 or larger. North of Thirroul, the prices start to climb, but the atmosphere is great, but you’re also getting close to 30mins from Wollongong CBD.

Skip Wollongong, and move to Kiama, great area great schools, only 30 mins to Wollongong for work

thanks forvthe input, much appreciated. Moving down very very soon.

Woonona, Corrimal, Flinders, Shell Cove, Shell Harbour, Cordeux Heights and Albion Park are still on the list.

Kiama, sounds great, bit too much in the dollars department for me though.

Love in the info, keep it coming.

thanks all David

Oh, before I forget. Bulli East is a very nice area too. Close to the beach and all that, but has one major drawback that the Agents don’t tell you: no ADSL! It’s on the Corrimal exchange but too far away for ADSL. West of the rail is OK (but further from the beach). So if fast internet matters…
