Should Nick D'Arcy go to the games?

Initially I was all for banning this bloke after seeing the damage that he did to Simon Cowley after the qualifying sessions (and the extended drinking session) However, the more info that’s made available ,the more I can see some extenuating circumstances. Seems that he was mouthing off after drinking 12 pots (or schooners) when Simon Cowley told him to settle down and slapped D’Arcy’s face.Whilst it was initially alleged that D’Arcy punched Cowley it now turns out to have been a single blow with his elbow that did all the damage. When you realise that D”Arcy is the 200 metres Butterfly champion, you can understand the upper arm and shoulder strength that he would have developed over the years. Not surprising that one ill judged action ,fuelled by way too many beers could have caused such damage to Cowley’s face. He’ll be lucky to stay out of prison I guess, but maybe his actions weren’t so bad as originally suggested.

Let him go, if they can let Michael Diamond go to the Games while awaiting trial they can let this guy go, he hasn’t been convicted of anything yet. I don’t condone what he appears to have done, but I don’t think the incident is enough to warrant keeping him at home.

IMO he doesn’t deserve to go – he made a right royal mess of Simon’s face and he will face some (in due course) very serious assault charges at court.

the only reason there is discussion of him not going is because he is not a serious medal contender.

Simon Cowley slaps this guy in the face and then has a cry when he cops a flogging. Be a man Simon and take your beating. D’Arcy should have bottled him. Simon started it, bad luck take it like a man

Get off your high horse. There was a couple of boys on the drink and a couple of punched were thrown. So what?

Of course he should go. Is there anything more Aussie than getting into a bruhaha at the boozer after a big night on the piss?
The fake Firey was just keeping the seat warm for me. |

Hi Scott, I gave my opinion based on my experience of the serious injuries that Simon sustained. Assault charges are based on the seriousness of the injuries sustained, not on how many punches were thrown. I wonder if you would feel the same way if you received these same injuries. :) PS FYI, I have never been on a horse. :)

I think he shouldn’t go….. from what I hear the other guy started it. Just cause D’Ardy finished it shouldn’t make him the bad guy.

Drop him from swimming and enlist him in the boxing

There is such a thing as Appropriate response. A slap in the face and being told to calm down does not warrant the broken bones that the other guy received.

D’arcy ’s got form – he’s done it before. Make an example of him. He stays home.

C’mon people!!! This guy has just “BASHED” another person and very easily could have killed him!!

I am getting a tad sick of the line that kids look up to sports people therefore they are not allowed to make any mistake. stop blaming other people and things for the way your child behaves. values are learned in the home not via the media…..unless the media is the only parenting they get there are penalties that may be applied to Nick, I just think he should be permitted to do the thing he has worked for for an extremely long time. how would you feel about losing something you have worked for over half your life simply because you overreacted while drunk. kids look up to a whole range of people, Parents, teachers, musicians, politicians etc why is it that only some sports people become the target of this kind of puritanism?
|
|
One has to think about John Daly here as well considering we are a golfing forum. He was a freak on the course when he was drunk. Sonab, I hope when I have kids that they do not look up to politicians as I hope they become one so they can rort the country.

He shouldn’t go. This is not the first time that Nick D’Arcy has done something like this. He is actually quite well known on the Sunshine Coast for his antics. He is lucky that his family are able to pay off his victims

If he touched me, he’ll come off second best. How much of our money do these wankers chew up for the sake of representing Australia at some useless sport like swimming. Stuff him, he should stay and get a taste of my whip across his face and his Ba-ls and see how he likes it!

How many times can you ” overreact when drunk” before you have to face the consequences of your actions. This guy is supposed to be about to represent his country in arguably the worlds greatest sporting event & he does this sort of thing. And of course the other question is what was a supposedly elite athlete doing getting that drunk in the first place. Certainly not part of his training.
A bad day on the golf course is better than no golf at all.

so you would prefer to watch the best teetotaler rather than the best sports person is that what you are saying? I am not saying what he did was right, I just think that the attempt to make out that athletes are not allowed to be flawed is only going to lead to mediocrity.
