Cult comedies

I feel like I have watched every episode of every comedy I think is worthwhile.

Wondering if anyone has any hidden gems, some cult comedy that I (and everyone else) hasn't seen.

Some examples of my favourites (which I highly recommend to anyone that has not seen the following)

Black Books (Dylan Moran, Bill Bailey)
The Office (Ricky Gervais)
Extras (Ricky Gervais)
Peep Show
Curb Your Enthusiasm

Plus the obvious (Seinfeld, Monty Python, Family Guy, Simpsons etc)

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Strangers with Candy

For classic comedy movies rather than sitcoms

1) This is Spinal Tap...and the whole lot of movies that sprung from it like Waiting for Guffman, Best in Show, etc
2) Clerks

I only post here when the other site gets quiet...

Fawlty Towers

I've seen a few episodes of Black Books, very funny.

The obvious pommy contributions:

The Young Ones
Comic Strip Presents..
Filthy, Rich and Catflap
Absolutely Fabulous
Alas Smith and Jones
BlackAdder

Don't discount the US version of The Office. Now in season 3 it has become its' own entity and is well worth a look.

Green Wing, Fast Show and Spaced are all worth seeking out.

I'm Alan Partridge (if you can find it).

The UK is back in the lead for cutting edge comedy.

Red Dwarf

As you seem to be into your British comedy, The Royle Family is a must.

Don't worry about sampling it, just log onto quickflix.com.au and buy series 1,2 and 3.

You won't regret it.

Cheers (The first few series)

Men behaving badly
arrested development
scrubs first couple of seasons..

Lenny Henry's - Chef. Hilarious but very hard to find.

minder
new tricks
get smart
open all hours

putt,putt,putt,pftt.

And then?

Myself and the missus are massive fans of Blackadder and we are part way through the Blackadder goes forth series which is outstanding stuff. Ahhhh Captain Darling! laugh.gif

Anything Alan Partridge is classic and you should also have a look out for 'Brasseye'. I think the guy behind it was called Chris Morris who according to some mates is an all time comic legend. 'The day today' if you fancy ordering up some old VHS is also well worth it.

I'm also thinking of ordering the Ronnie Barker tribute. Lots of classic snippets from Porridge, open all hours and The Two Ronnies

George:

Oh sir, just one thing. If we should happen to tread on a
mine, what do we do?

Blackadder:

Well, normal procedure, Lieutenant, is to jump 200 feet
into the air and scatter yourself over a wide area.

Beware of cheap imitations - Especially from the US

Game On
Coupling

modern English classics :-)

For further information, send me a PM?

Adlo,

If you like your smartish comedies, you must check out "Arrested Development", Probably the best US sitcom ever. Based on the other shows you have listed, it seems right up your alley.

Its on special every few months at JB. (you must start at series 1, the plot and jokes get intricate as it goes along).

If you can relate to out of work actors and writers, and share house living then "Spaced" is a very underated British show about 7 years old written by and starring Simon Pegg and Nick Frost who wrote and starred in "Shawn of the Dead" and "Hot Fuzz". Only available on ebay i think.

The D Gen series
Chasers - contempory, but already a classic

Wow thanks for all the suggestions.

A couple I have never heard of that I will check out (Royle Family, Spaced...). I am a huge Simon Pegg fan so that sounds good. His cameo as the owner of Goliath Books in 1st Episode Series 3 Black Books is absolute GOLD.

Also a few I have heard of like Arrested Development and Coupling that I never got around to watching. Will check them out for sure.

School is out for me on American OFFICE, I admittedly have only seen 2 episodes. I just found it so painful. The comedy didn't translate into the American sitcom style. Might try again...

For those that have suggested Alan Partridge stuff, cheers, but I should have had that in my list. One of my faves. I have seen Knowing Me, Knowing You as well as I am Alan Partridge Series 1&2. "Back of the net". Steve Coogan is a genius, very funny in anything I have seen him in.

Alan Partridge stuff is very hard to find. I have it all on my Hard drive, if anyone wants to check it out send me some blank DVDs and I'll get you a copy. Likewise with Peep Show. Hard to find, have it on the Hard drive...

Thanks again, Keep them coming...

Coupling - modern English classic :-)

Can highly recommend these listed, they are pure gold.

I'd also throw in 'Hardware', 'Teachers' & 'Keeping up Appearances' from the UK & 'American Dad' from the US.

I'm guessing you don't have Foxtel?? You can find some good shows on UKTV that you've never heard of, failing that ABC occasionally run some new shows.

Peep show

I saw this once and it was friggin hilarious.

Is it still on ?

Scrubs and Coupling for my 2c worth.

World Of Pub
League Of Gentlemen

Big Train & The Harry Enfield Show are two skit programs worthy of a second look.

Curb your Enthusiasm and Arrested Development are both excellent - but my favourite is Reno 911. I try and catch it before i go to golf saturday mornings...
I saw the Robinsons the other night - that was pretty good too.
