ANZAC Day

Alright - so I am biased, but hey, let's go through the reasons why.

Remembrance : A lot of people did some amazing things along way from home. Whether right or wrong, they did what they did because they loved their country. Old mates getting together once a year to remember comrades, tis a beautiful thing. Lest we forget.

Being a bit of a Rugby fan, it is nice to actually like the Kiwi's for 24 hours . . . And please remember - Australia and New Zealand are yet to actually start a war.

It is the only holiday that doesn't have an advertising campaign, no bullsh1t retail companies peddling this and that. Just you, the family and a few diggers, ya gotta love that.

Two-Up: The ONLY gambling game in the world that is a "zero sum game", ie: a winner and a loser, no commission, no rake and the rules so simple that anyone can play. Most clubs and Pubs also have a nominated charity that collect a good dose of the people's winnings.

Enjoy the best holiday of the year... by a long shot.

I agree, it is a very important day and one that all Australians should celebrate.

One question for you though - I was once severely chastised by a mate for going to Yum Cha on Anzac Day. Do you think this is fair?

Two up is now banned COMPLETLY in NSW. Even ANZAC day.

woohoo my birthday today!! 14 y/o

Not sure if that is all together accurate...some clubs & pubs have banned it due to alocohol/violence issues.

Given they were our allies in the War in the Pacific in the 40s, that is a bit silly.

Our Trans-Tasman allies kind of left their Anzac pluck at the team hotel today before folding like a cheap suit this morning.

So Yum Cha is Ok, but Sushi is off limits?

The NZ'ers were pathetic today, as expected. How come they were waving Australian flags in the crowd?

Can't say it is easy to get fresh on a public holiday anyway, so we are spared the frightful conundrum smile.gif

The Turkish takeaway not far from me is also open today. Yes or no?

This a moral issue, not a food issue.

Have we matured enough as people to remember the past is past and no matter what happened or who did it we cannot change it.

I think so. They look Turkish. And they do a mean kebab.

The kebab is certainly a big drawcard

My opinion is quite different - ANZAC day should not be an US/THEM mentality. It is a remembrance holiday. The Turks view Galipoli as one of the greatest battles ever fought, and they SHOULD, they defended their homeland from invaders in the most trying of conditions.

As for the Japanese, it is a different culture of battle. Our side saw battle with honour and respect for the opposition through centuries of fighting this way. The Japanese had a more Barbaric warfare culture.

I am sure that there are examples of both kinds of behavour on both sides. but seeing as I lost 4 of my close relatives in the Pacific including one 2 weeks after the war was over... it is bloody hard to eat Sushi today.

All that being said - if ANZAC day doesn't include reconciliation, especially through the next generation - it could be viewed as rather shallow. Nothing wells me up more than watching old soldiers going back to converse with former enemies. Truly heroic stuff.

Hindsight is a wonderful thing... yesterdays "Hun", "Communist" and "Yellow Hoard" is todays "Terrorist", "Freedom Fighter" and "Martyr". It is all a matter of perspective and culture.

Enjoy

Wow you must be right Virge.

Don't eat that Sushi, don't watch that Japanese TV, don't drive that Japanese car, don't swing those Japanese golf bats.

Just because you lost 4 close relatives in the pacific does not not mean that you are automatically in a position to make such a broad based assertion about Japanese culture.

I am not for a minute excusing any atrocities commited by either side but your comments show that you are ill informed or completely uninformed. Especially when you talk about "

Our side saw battle with honour and respect for the opposition through centuries of fighting this way

"

WTF does "

Our side

" mean?

There are plenty of countries in the world that were "settled" in the quest to "turn the map red from Cape Town to Cairo" that would like a degree of clarity on your interpretation of the terms "

honour

" and "

respect

".

The British invented concentration camps FFS.

Does honour and respect also extend to poisoning water supplies in the Boer war (and also a couple in Australia to fix up the black population as well)

The Europeans also didn't see anything wrong with stealing the lands of the black african tribes and then mowing them down when they protested.

Have a read of how honourable and respectful the Russians were throughout their military history.

There are not too many figures that can take the high moral ground when you start going back war by war and century by century.

Jack,

I'm all for forgive and forget. I don't have any trouble noshing into a feed of Sushi (or Okonomiyaki or Oyakodon) just because the Japanese were shooting at my grandfather or my missus's grandfather.

Likewise - I don't mind a feed of kebab despite the fact that the Turks shot one of my mother's great uncles at Gallipoli. I have also been known to drink the odd German beer despite the fact that the Germans shot another of my Mum's great uncles in France the following year.

However, the French can stick their food (BTW - that is not related to the fact that they haven't shot at any of my family).
