If it’s their first wedding and they are sub 30 you load up and look after them.
It’s pretty easy to do.
You wont even notice the missing $500 in 4 weeks, but they sure as hell will.

You serious? As a couple $500 is nothing. If the wedding couple are lucky it will cover the cost of us being there.
If one of the parents paid for the wedding it will help set them up when combined with 50 other contributions.

Absolutely serious. As others have said, weddings aren’t about making money (or breaking even). If money is tight then you most certainly shouldn’t be spending $25k-$30k to get married.

I’m with you there. People overspend.
I’ve been to a wedding that would have cost $1500 per head. Greatest wedding I’ve ever been to.
On the lawn the 80 or so guests slammed down 24k of Krug in 45 minutes. But the guy could afford it.
But just because someone went overboard I’m not going to give them a quick pick out of spite.

It’s about making decisions that are sensible, if you need money off your guests to pay for the wedding you should not be having an expensive wedding in the first place, youngsters today want everything immediately, seem to think its their right. Wake up ppl.

People mention “x” for singles and “2x” for couples. What if you are a single income family?
For me, it depends, but it’ll rarely be more than $100 in cash or gifts.
You don’t get married for the presents off people, and if you need others to offset the cost, then you can’t afford it. It’s a bit like the baby bonus… if you need it to have the baby, then you are already in too deep…

The bottom line is it’s a gift, a present that you are giving to a family member or good friend, cause chances are you won’t be there unless you are important to the couple. The question and answer is based around what you think is a fair present, and as it turns out the accepted response to the best of my understanding is in and around what you think the cost for your seat may be, but it is ultimately a gift.

Tol, it becomes fun when the cost of living has changed ever so slightly since you first landed in Oz?
are the prices of stuff similar? Stuff like luxury items like petrol or a train ticket to town, stuff like a 800sqm block of land? They are al the same as what they were back then aren’t they? You’d be happy for your son, and his children to grow up without any assistance like you mentioned wouldn’t you? Or are they correct in raking responsibility for themselves and pay what you had to when you came here ???.....

How much will you give me for renewing my vows? I’ve beat the odds thus far on already being divorced so that would be worth something! ;)

My son has been raised to believe he is responsible for himself, we never asked for or received any assistance, if we could not afford it we went without, we saved and purchased when we could. Wages have kept in touch with inflation so things are still affordable, the only thing driving inflation is greed ppl wanting everything now and not wanting to save and wait, the more ppl wanting NOW drives up prices.
When we came to Australia we paid our own fares. We purchased a run down cottage in the UK, stripped it from floor to ceiling and renovated it, this was our stake for Australia. We started out by buying a small not too good house, saved and upgraded, we could see the potential in Australia but we were realistic, we walked first. The problem today is they want it now, new cars, new house, new everything, and to answer your question, yes, I would be pleased with my son if he did not claim assistance because he has not earned it and does not deserve it.
My job when we first came was not well paid and I have never been in a position to waste money, having had two situations that made finances hard but having a wife that could budget under extremes has made life easier, we could afford one child so that is what we had, it’s called being realistic.

who are responsibile for teaching the “we deserve everything brigade?” Your son is not included in that because you taught him correctly. so obviously all the rest if us who deserve everything now were not taught correctly by our parents, right? or is it more fair to say that we have chosen to ignore everything our parents have taught us and feel we have the right to have everything given to us without working for it? all this now days because some couples don’t want three toasters….

I don’t know your position on this but it is a little more than wanting cash at a wedding, this is just IMO the tip of the now ppl. when we married we instructed ppl not to buy presents, we wanted to get married so why should our wants impact financially on others.
You are correct by saying some think it is their right to hand outs when they have not earned it, I have met many of them in my volunteer work. there are the genuine ppl who are victims of circumstance and some who consider it is their right to not work but still live the good life, many of these have children from multiple partners and consider it is their right to be looked after even though they have never and will never contribute to the country.
All this from wedding gifts. And what is wrong with three toasters?
