After I watched and enjoyed the recent “Jack Irish” shows on ABC, my wife suggested that I may also like the books. She said that there were 4 “Jack Irish” novels and another 4 or 5 stand alone books. In any case, she reserved what she could through our local library and before long they started turning up at our local (library that is).
Have to admit that even though most of them were set in and around Melbourne and 4 of them had frequent references to AFL and the former Fitzroy club they were still terrific reading.Peter Temple seems to have a damn good grasp of the detective genre and (what I think ) is a great sense of humour.Well worth a look if you like that sort of thing and haven’t tried his books before.
Didn’t like “In the Evil Day”as much,fwiw.

Try iron rose, one of his best imo. Didnt like in evil day either much. All great reads though.

Just finished Shooting Star and have The Broken Shore to follow – writes a good yarn & , me being Victorian, it’s good to be able to visualise his locations.

Have also read Black Tide, the 2nd of the Jack Irish ones they did on TV – didn’t lose much in the transition from book to television

The difference in golf and government is that in golf you can’t improve your lie.

Thanks for that ,but I’ve read them all.Iron Rose was (as you say) a very good read.Dialogue is sparse but every word on every page actually counts.Have just read the latest michael Connelly novel and it is nowhere near the quality of Peter Temple’s work;especially over the last few years.Looking forward to the final 2 Jack Irish shows on ABC.

It’s not whether you win or lose, but whether I win or lose (Sandy Lyle)

You’ll love The Broken Shore, Lefty.Makes me wonder about Peter Temple’s background when I read some of the things he comes up with. Seems to know some interesting techniques but maybe he just does great research.I even enjoy the AFL backstory ,which is saying something.

Ah Tolmij; the AFL story is actually some old blokes who sit around complaining that their club (Fitzroy) is defunct.I reckon even Kiwi wouldn’t mind that. Why not actually read one of the books, you may really enjoy it.
