Not sure if it was just the rather solemn occasion but today I thought that this particular “welcome from the traditional owners” was a bit ott. Is this fair enough, or is my lack of understanding showing through?
Is this actually a legal requirement (does anyone know) or are they just being nice and/or politically correct by allowing it to take place.

He was a bit over the top. The sentiment was still genuine it seemed. Not sure it’s necessary before every Test though.

...please PLEASE….DO NOT get me started on our coloured folk….

Consultancy….if you’re not part of the solution, there’s big bucks to be made prolonging the problem.

There are very few countries in the world that are run and owned by the TRADITIONAL OWNERS. What we now have to do is learn to live together but I think that concept is lost on some.

I will break 90 this year.

It is NOT my age.

It is NOT for 9

Once again I am the reserve moderator ( officially unofficial ) after stink if he decides to come back, which is not likely as he likes being NAUGHTY.

Rather than a respectful comment, I think it can take effect as a polarising, divisive comment. I think it’s better left unsaid. We’re all Australians. That’s it.

Wow we agree.

That was how it came across to me, but then again I’m not a fan of the concept .

Gonna throw a bone out here, we have to watch the kiwis do their little dancey thing and not just in their country, so I think we should tolerate our indigenous fellow Australians welcoming ALL and sundry to participate in a white mans game such as cricket. After all our first cricket team to tour England in 1868 were indigenous, so maybe they are remembering/ celerbrating their relations in some sort of way.

what
watch some arse clowns shouting ozzie ozzie ozzie oi oi oi

any one else heading home to get married??

Didn’t realise our indigenous brothers had a battle dance of a sort. The only one’s I saw was spear throwing at 50 paces and some “chicken dance, shake-a-leg, imitate some bird/animal” stomp. Be interesting to see what they come up with.

Totally ignorant about almost everything except golf.

It’s not only at sporting events either.

We also have to endure this at school functions as well.

A bit over the top if you ask me.

Of all of the welcomes I have heard, all of the Aunties seemed to do a very tasteful welcome, but this Uncle just didn’t seem to nail it. I can’t remember specifically what he said but there were a couple things that took me back a bit.

Jarro, is it a school with special Aboriginal connections as such?

Have you come here to play Jesus, with the leopards in your head

I am number six double three

No, not that i am aware of.

It happens at most official events these days. Does anyone know if there is legislation covering this. I was at a morning tea for a charity and they did this as well and certainly raised a few eyebrows.

Not sure that it is ‘Legislated’ as such, but from memory (and that’s bad at the best of times) I think it all started with the push for the ‘Stolen Generation Apology’, suddenly the need to acknowledge the traditional owners, or identified indigenous tribe of the area came into vogue.

What I want to know is, how do they know who the traditional owners are. Are they suggesting that indigenous tribes did not have battles and take each others lands, as has been the case with every race ever documented. It that is the case, maybe they do have something they can teach us and the rest of the world, but I seriously doubt it.

The key to success is to learn to do something right, then do it right every time. Oh I wish…..

There was a story in the media yesterday claiming that the orginal inhabitants were wiped out by a cataclysmic drought around 7,000 years ago.

You sure that every other race ever documented battled over territory?
That’s a massive call.
An awful lot of indigenous people around the world are nomadic, therefore land grabs by force would be quite rare.

Well I guess the indigenous inhabitants were already here when Cook landed and promptly ’ claimed the land in the name of the king or queen of England’ and effed things for them so who knows?

One wonders if they would have survived if the Chinese had beaten Cook to discover Oz….or if the Japanese invasion in 1942 was successful…..

.....or if the French hadn’t folded and claimed Australia instead of New Caledonia.
Have a look how the indigenous folks have been treated under French colonial rule around the world…up until today, with the Kanaks in New Caledonia.

Listen i have the greatest respect for the aboriginals struggle. I thought yesterdays ceremony was almost rammed down our collective throats. Perhaps a more subtle presentation would have a more lasting impression, as they say less is more
